My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could
make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip, and came
to be called Pip.

I give Pirrip as my father's family name, on the authority of his tombstone and my sister—
Mrs. Joe Gargery, who married the blacksmith. As I never saw my father or my mother, and
never saw any likeness of either of them (for their days were long before the days of
photographs), my first fancies regarding what they were like, were unreasonably derived from
their tombstones. The shape of the letters on my father's, gave me an odd idea that he was a
square, stout, dark man, with curly black hair. From the character and turn of the inscription,
"Also Georgiana Wife of the Above," I drew a childish conclusion that my mother was freckled
and sickly. To five little stone lozenges, each about a foot and a half long, which were arranged
in a neat row beside their grave, and were sacred to the memory of five little brothers of mine—
who gave up trying to get a living, exceedingly early in that universal struggle—I am indebted
for a belief I religiously entertained that they had all been born on their backs with their hands
in their trousers-pockets, and had never taken them out in this state of existence.

Ours was the marsh country, down by the river, within, as the river wound, twenty miles of
the sea. My first most vivid and broad impression of the identity of things, seems to me to have
been gained on a memorable raw afternoon towards evening. At such a time I found out for
certain, that this bleak place overgrown with nettles was the churchyard; and that Philip Pirrip,
late of this parish, and also Georgiana wife of the above, were dead and buried; and that
Alexander, Bartholomew, Abraham, Tobias, and Roger, infant children of the aforesaid, were
also dead and buried; and that the dark flat wilderness beyond the churchyard, intersected with
and mounds and gates, with scattered cattle feeding on it, was the marshes; and that
the low leaden line beyond, was the river; and that the distant savage lair from which the wind
was rushing, was the sea; and that the small bundle of shivers growing afraid of it all and
beginning to cry, was Pip.

"Hold your noise!" cried a terrible voice, as a man started up from among the graves at the
side of the church porch. "Keep still, you little, or I'll your throat!”

the dancer and a kitchen match when it is first struck
the dancer and the brilliant flame of a kitchen match
the audience and the heat from a lighted kitchen match

What is the meaning of imperious as it is used in Line 13?

commanding
assaultive
compulsory
insulting

Answers

Answer:

I agree that it is C. as well.

Answer:

The dancer and a kitchen match when it is first struck.

Commanding.

Explanation:

In the first stanza, the author compares the dancer with a kitchen match when it is first struck. The author tells us that when a kitchen match is first struck, it sends white flickering tongues before it bursts into flame. Similarly, the dancer begins her steps, and she resembles a match that is trying to create a flame.

The word "imperious" refers to something that is domineering or overbearing. In this case, it can also mean commanding. The author tells us that the dancer has a commanding attitude as she sends the "fire" away from her.

"Daffodils"
By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
6 Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
12 Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company;
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
18 What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
24 And dances with the daffodils.
According to the poem, what view of nature is presented?
A) Nature can bring hatred, it can do things to the mind
B) Nature is relied on to bring humanity joy
C) Nature is powerful but frightening
D) Nature is unsettling in its vastness

When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils

What change would occur to these lines of the poem if the word “golden” were replaced with “withered”?
A) The daffodils would no longer be visible to the speaker
B) The mood of the poem would change from gloomy to joyful
C) The tone of the view would change from pleasant to depressing
D) There would be no meaningful change in the lines

Using context clues, what is the meaning of the underlined word from stanza 4, line 20.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
24 And dances with the daffodils.
A) frustrated
B) thoughtful
C) friendly
D) sympathetic

Answers

For question one, the answer is not "C, Nature is powerful but frightening." The poem states nothing of it being scary just the facts. The same for "A" as well. It doesn't relate to the poem. The only 2 that I see that are correct is B or D. The best choice would be B.

Ok, next we have question 2. Already, we know that A and B is not correct. B states that making it withered would make stuff joyful. It would be the other way around. "A" Doesn't make sense either. Neither would D. The best choice would be C. Since withered would mean its fading away and dying it would go from pleasant to depressing.

For question 3, there is no underlined word. I can help you, just tell them in the comments.

Have a great day.

Thank you for also choosing brainly for help.

: )

Final answer:

In 'Daffodils' by W. Wordsworth, nature is depicted as a bringer of joy and the replacement of 'golden' with 'withered' would result in a sadder tone for the poem. The underlined word 'pensive' is understood to mean thoughtful.

Explanation:

According to the poem "Daffodils" by William Wordsworth, the view of nature presented is that nature is relied on to bring humanity joy (option B). This is evidenced by the uplifting tone when the narrator describes his experience with the daffodils and how they bring him joy.

If the word "golden" were replaced with "withered" in the lines "When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils", the tone of the view would change from pleasant to depressing (option C). The colour "golden" fills the mind with images of warmth, vibrancy, and life, while "withered" would indicate decay and death; thus changing the mood of the poem.

The context clues in the underlined word "pensive" from stanza 4, line 20 indicate that the term means thoughtful (option B), inferring that the narrator is in a reflective or introspective mood, considering the beauty and significance of his experience with the daffodils.

Pride and Prejudice: Why does Elizabeth tell Jane, "We all love to instruct, though we can teach only what is not worth knowing"?

Answers

Answer:

Hopefully this helps!

Explanation:

In Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice," Elizabeth Bennet responds to her sister Jane's habit of receiving unwanted advice and interfering in their lives by saying, "We all love to instruct, though we can teach only what is not worth knowing."

This declaration reveals Elizabeth's irritation with her mother's conduct and her conviction that Mrs. Bennet's attempts to offer advice frequently lack insight and are based on unimportant details.

When Elizabeth says, "We all love to instruct," she is referring to the desire that is inherent in all people to impart information and offer guidance.

She continues, however, that they can only impart "what is not worth knowing," meaning that her mother's advice is devoid of substance or insightful knowledge.

This assertion also highlights Elizabeth's independence and her resistance to be swayed by her mother's flawed educational methods. It displays her autonomous thought and defiance of advice she deems irrelevant or unimportant.

Thus, Elizabeth's comment emphasises the distinction between meaningless teaching and insightful information while stressing her own dedication to evaluating the importance of the lessons she is given.

Question 18 options:

A. learn not only how but also why the things that happen do in our world.

B. learn both how as well as why things happen in our world.

C. learn how, and at the same time, why, things happen in our world.

D. learn how, but not why, things happen in our world.

learn how and why things happen in our world.

Answers

Answer:

E.

Explanation:

This makes the sentence grammatically correct

Answer:

The answer is indeed letter E) learn how and why things happen in our world.

Explanation:

In the original sentence, there is a wordiness problem. Wordiness happens when writers use more words than necessary to say something. It can involve repetition of terms - which is the case here - or redundant expressions. In the sentence "Experiments help scientists learn how things happen in our world and why things happen in our world," there should be no need to repeat the phrase "things happen in our world". All we must do is find a way to say the same thing, but using that phrase only once. We must try to keep it simple; it will be of no use if we remove that phrase but add too many words in its place.

Letter A - is not totally incorrect, but it also has a wordiness problem;

Letter B - is incorrect; there is no need to use "both" and "as well as" together;

Letter C - same as A, too many words;

Letter D - incorrect; changes the original meaning when it uses "but not why";

Letter E - is perfect. It uses the phrase "things happen in our world" only once and keeps the connection simple by employing the conjunction "and".
