Read the following passage and answer the question that follows.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Part 1

Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable. At friendly meetings, and when the wine was to his taste, something eminently human beaconed from his eye; something indeed which never found its way into his talk, but which spoke not only in these silent symbols of the after-dinner face, but more often and loudly in the acts of his life. He was austere with himself; drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages; and though he enjoyed the theatre, had not crossed the doors of one for twenty years. But he had an approved tolerance for others; sometimes wondering, almost with envy, at the high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds; and in any extremity inclined to help rather than to reprove.
"I incline to, Cain's heresy*," he used to say. "I let my brother go to the devil in his quaintly 'own way.'" In this character, it was frequently his fortune to be the last reputable acquaintance and the last good influence in the lives of down-going men. And to such as these, so long as they came about his chambers, he never marked a shade of change in his demeanour.
No doubt the feat was easy to Mr. Utterson; for he was undemonstrative at the best, and even his friendship seemed to be founded in a similar catholicity of good-nature. It is the mark of a modest man to accept his friendly circle ready-made from the hands of opportunity; and that was the lawyer's way. His friends were those of his own blood or those whom he had known the longest; his affections, like ivy, were the growth of time, they implied no aptness in the object. Hence, no doubt, the bond that united him to Mr. Richard Enfield, his distant kinsman, the well-known man about town. It was a nut to crack for many, what these two could see in each other, or what subject they could find in common. It was reported by those who encountered them in their Sunday walks, that they said nothing, looked singularly dull, and would hail with obvious relief the appearance of a friend. For all that, the two men put the greatest store by these excursions, counted them the chief jewel of each week, and not only set aside occasions of pleasure, but even resisted the calls of business, that they might enjoy them uninterrupted.
*The biblical story of Cain and Abel is a story about two brothers who gave offerings to God. Abel’s offering was accepted by God, but Cain’s was not. Jealous, Cain killed his brother. When God asked Cain where Abel was, Cain said, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” By saying this, Cain implied that what his brother did was his own business. (Genesis 4:1-16)

The passage implies that which of these is true about Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield?

They only tolerated each other because of their family connection.
They were united by their common interest in exploring new places.
They had more fun with each other than with anyone else they knew.
They enjoyed each other's company despite differences in temperament.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

This passage from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde  by Robert Louis Stevenson implies that they only tolerated each other because of their family connection. The correct answer is the first one.

Explanation:

According to this excerpt Mr. Utterson was used to base his relationships "in a similar catholicity of good-nature" and his friends were those "of his own blood or those whom he had known the longest". That was the reason for him to be friends with his "distant kinsman". They didn't seem to have much in common, but still they spent time together, and shared long walks. Those who used to see them said how dull they seemed together and it was difficult to know how or what they found attractive in each other. The reason is that they were family, they'd known each other for a long time and that was enough reason to be "friends".

Abridged from Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe

Being the third son of the family and not bred to any trade, my head began to be filled very early with rambling thoughts. My father, who was very ancient, had given me a competent share of learning, as far as house-education and a country free school generally go, and designed me for the law; but I would be satisfied with nothing but going to sea; and my inclination to this led me so strongly against the will, nay, the commands of my father, and against all the entreaties and persuasions of my mother and other friends, that there seemed to be something fatal in that propensity of nature, tending directly to the life of misery which was to befall me.

Explanation:

In this passage, we can see that, in the past, parents and children disagreed about what was best for the future in the same way as they disagree nowadays. Read the excerpt from the US Supreme court case Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). The statute of Louisiana, acts of 1890, c. 111, requiring railway companies carrying passengers in their coaches in that State, to provide equal, but separate, accommodations for the white and colored races, by providing two or more passenger coaches for each passenger train, or by dividing the passenger coaches by a partition so as to secure separate accommodations; and providing that no person shall be permitted to occupy seats in coaches other than the ones assigned to them, on account of the race they belong to; and requiring the officer of the passenger train to assign each passenger to the coach or compartment assigned for the race to which he or she belong; and imposing fines or imprisonment upon passengers insisting on going into a coach or compartment other than the one set aide for the race to which he or she belongs; and conferring upon officers of the train power to refuse to carry on the train passengers refusing to occupy the coach or compartment assigned to them, and exempting the railway company from liability for such refusal, are not in conflict with the provisions either of the Thirteenth Amendment or of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Which best explains why the Supreme Court’s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson was unconstitutional?
The Supreme Court’s ruling allowed states to deny equal protection to any person within its jurisdiction.
Since the 14th Amendment did not make concessions for people born outside the US, the Supreme Court’s decision could not be applied.
The Supreme Court’s decision gave individual states the freedom to make their own laws in relation to non-whites.
Since segregation laws did not provide equal protections or liberties to non-whites, the ruling was not consistent with the 14th Amendment.

Answers

The correct answer should be
Since segregation laws did not provide equal protections or liberties to non-whites, the ruling was not consistent with the 14th Amendment.

The segregation laws were declared constitutional but other types of state protection was not meddled with. The state still protected people if they were attacked or killed, that is in theory it protected, but legally it should have. Segregation laws were declared constitutional because they didn't infringe upon the 14th amendment.

Atticus suggests Mayella broke what unspoken code of the south?

tempting a black man
lying in a courtroom
asking a black man for help
being alone with a man in her house

Answers

Answer:

Tempting a black man

Explanation:

“She has committed no crime, she has merely broken a rigid and time-honored code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with. … No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterward.”

Atticus Finch is presenting a fundamental differentiation of how the local society sees its own rules and the actual laws.

Mayella broke the code of society by making advances on a black man. The local society would never accept that a white woman would be interested in Tom Robinson because of his skin color and would hurry to judge him as guilty even though that was no evidence to prove it.

There is no actual logic to it, and that's what made it so hard on the children that tried to think of it logically. Mayella simply broke the social norm when she invited a black man to her house and came on to him. Tom Robinson himself knew that nothing good would come from it and so did she.

IS IT C OR D

Answers

D.
Michael Dorris's book The Broken Cord made readers more aware of the problem of fetal alcohol syndrome, one of his adopted sons was diagnosed with this condition.

The correctly punctuated sentence is C, that is, "one day Nick's roommate brought home a ferret; he'd seen it at a pet store and couldn't resist it".  When a semicolon is used to link two separate ideas, these ideas are given the same degree of importance, they are considered to be equals.

A and B are grammatically incorrect and D is wrongly punctuated. In A, the subordinate clause does not have a subject (it should be "agent Orange, which is believed to be..."). The same happens in B (Johnny Cash, who auditioned for a record producer signing mainly gospel tunes, was told...). In D, there should be a colon after the noun "fetal alcohol syndrome".

Final answer:

In 'Of Mice and Men', the boss reacts with initial suspicion towards George's friendship with Lennie, believing George may be exploiting Lennie. This is due to the fact that it's uncommon for two men to travel together in their line of work. Nevertheless, the boss accepts their companionship after seeing the hard-working nature of Lennie.

Explanation:

In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, the boss is initially suspicious of George and Lennie's friendship. The boss, who is portrayed as a demanding and stern character, finds it peculiar that George speaks on behalf of Lennie. He assumes that George might be taking advantage of Lennie in some way and expresses this concern directly to George.

In the hierarchical world of migrant ranch workers, it's uncommon for two men to travel and work together, which is why the boss reacts with suspicion towards George's friendship with Lennie. Despite his initial reaction, the boss eventually accepts their unique friendship after observing Lennie's impressive work ethic.

The teachings of Buddha promote a moral life by highlighting the four Noble Truths: the existence of suffering, the origin of suffering from attachment to desires, the cessation of suffering through detachment, and the path to freedom from suffering by following the middle way. This pragmatic and personal approach to spirituality, emphasizing moral living and personal responsibility, likely made Buddhism attractive to diverse populations across China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia. The religion's adaptability, including its accommodation for monastic life, engagement in public life through charity, and emphasis on karma, contributed to its widespread appeal. Furthermore, the incorporation of local philosophical inputs, such as East Asian interpretations of karma and the transient nature of phenomena, allowed Buddhism to resonate deeply with the intellectuals and the general populace.
