do you think Emerson's heros could slay a monster like grendel and why

I think that Emerson would consider Beowulf a hero. My reasoning behind this choice is that self trust is the essence of heroism. It is the state of the soul at war , and its ultimate objects are the last defiance of falsehood and wrong, and thee power to bear all that can be inflected by evil agents. It speaks the truth, and it is just , generous, hospitable, temperate, scornful of small calculations, and scornful of being scorned. One quality Emerson noted was a soldier of war attitude. Beowulf exhibits this quality in the following quote: " Friend-lord of folks, so far have I sought thee. That I may unaided , my earlmen assisting me. This brave-mooded war band , purify Heorot ''.Emerson goes on to put a hero's heroism has been in character since he was a young man. Beowulf was a brave man, he risked his life not only for his family but those around him as well. He was not only that, but a responsible and faithful maman as well as courageous.

The characteristics most necessary for defeating a monster like grendel would be to have a warlike attitude in his heart, showing that he is ready to defeat this evil monster and put an end to the killings.

Emerson's essay “Heroism” says that heroes put on a warlike attitude. The hero exhibits loyalty, obedience to one's self, self-trust, and he never gives up. The hero is able to trust his own ability to make decisions. Emerson's definition of heroism speaks to heroes of mythology as well as modern-day heroes.

What are two characteristics identified by Emerson that you believe a hero must possess?

Two characteristics by Emerson that I believe a hero must possess would be both self-trust and a mind of such balance.

What is the main message of Emerson's self reliance?

Topic: Should the Death Penalty be Abolished?

Although the Death Penelty is a very strict protocol, should it really be abolished? I believe that yes, it should be abolished. Here are 3 simple reasons why: the crime rate won’t be reduced either way, innocent people face the consequence for the culprit, it has been identified as a cruel and unusual punishment. Although there are various reasons why the Death Penalty should be abolished these are the three main ones that stand out the most.

Did you see the crime rate increasing by the minute all over the world? Yes, even countries with the capital punishment in effect have not been identified for crime rates being reduced. Studies have shown that “States that have death penalty laws do not have lower crime rates or murder rates than states without such laws.” This quote indicates that with or without the death penalty in affect, crime or murder rates have not been reduced. Crime and murder rates have not been shown to ruduce hece why the death penalty should be abolished since there has been no affect anyways.

Have you ever in your life been wrongfully accused of a certain action and had to face the consequence for the real culprit? How does it feel? Imagine an innocent person having to face the death penalty for the person that actually committed the crime. My reasearch has identified that “Eighteen people have been proven innocent and exonerated by DNA testing in the United States after serving time on death row. They were convicted in 11 states and served a combined 229 years in prison – including 202 years on death row – for crimes they didn't commit.” This suggests that many innocent lives have faced the death penalty for crimes that they have not committed which isn’t fair. This indicates that the death penalty should be abolished because innocent people could face the consequences.

Can it really be true? Yes, the death penalty is the cruel capital punishment for wrongdoings. The death penalty has established fear through the community and countries/states. Research has proven that “It is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. The death penalty is discriminatory. It is often used against the most vulnerable in society, including the poor, ethnic and religious minorities, and people with mental disabilities. Some governments use it to silence their opponents.” This identifies that the death penalty is cruel because it’s not only used for crime but used to (for example) silence others.

In conclusion, yes I strongly believe that the death penalty should be abolished. 3 reasons why I strongly believe that the death penalty should be abolished is because, the crime rate won’t be reduced either way, innocent people face the consequence for the culprit, it has been identified as a cruel and unusual punishment.

If Marilla had said that Matthew had gone to Bright River to meet a kangaroo from Australia Mrs. Rachel could not have been more astonished. She was actually quiet for five seconds. "It was unsupposable that Marilla was making fun of her, but Mrs. Rachel was almost forced to suppose it." From what point of view is the excerpt told? A third person limited B third person omniscient C first person D second person

Answers

B third person omniscient

The excerpt from 'Anne of Green Gables' is told from a third person limited point of view, focusing on Marilla's perspective and thoughts. So, option B is correct.

The excerpt from Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery is told from a third person limited point of view. This narrative voice provides the reader with the inner thoughts and feelings of Marilla, but not of Mrs. Rachel or Matthew. We see the situation through Marilla's eyes, knowing what she expects Mrs. Rachel to think and understanding her unspoken humor, which indicates a limited perspective rather than an omniscient one. In contrast, a third person omniscient narration would provide the thoughts and feelings of other characters as well, whereas first person would be narrated by a character in the story, and second person would address the reader as 'you'.

Which section from the article BEST explains how sleep can affect memories?

Question 1 options:

Introduction [paragraphs 1-5]

"Light Sleep Stages"

"No Longer In Control"

"Flushing Out Harmful Toxins"

Question 2 (1 point)
Read the following paragraph from the section "Flushing Out Harmful Toxins."

Another theory is that sleep is restorative and cleans out harmful toxins that can hurt the brain. During sleep, the space between brain cells increases. This allows harmful toxic proteins to be flushed out. In an October 2013 issue of the journal Science, researchers published the results of a study hypothesizing that the brain uses sleep to flush out harmful waste. This waste removal system, they suggest, is one of the major reasons why we sleep. By removing harmful waste from the brain, sleep may stave off diseases like Alzheimer's, which is characterized by memory loss.

What conclusion is BEST supported by the paragraph above?

Question 2 options:

Sleep might be an important tool to keep people healthy.

People who sleep the most will not get Alzheimer's.

The heath benefits of sleep are doubtful, but more research is needed.

People who do not sleep enough always have poor memories.

Question 3 (1 point)
The author includes information about the sleep stages first. Why does the author choose to provide information about dreaming next?

Question 3 options:

to suggest that REM sleep is more important than NREM sleep

to show what happens to the body physically while a person is dreaming

to demonstrate why people cannot usually remember their dreams

to highlight one activity, dreaming, that happens during REM sleep

Question 4 (1 point)
What is one reason why the author includes the information about Aristotle's beliefs about sleep?

Question 4 options:

to explain why sleep is an unusual practice for human beings

to show that people have tried to understand sleep for a long time

to demonstrate that today's scientists learned about sleep from Aristotle

to describe some of the connections between sleep and breathing

Answers

Answer:

Question 2

Sleep might be an important tool to keep people healthy. is correct

Final answer:

The section 'Light Sleep Stages' likely best explains how sleep can affect memories. The paragraph from 'Flashing Out Harmful Toxins' suggests that sleep might be an essential tool for maintaining health. The author discusses dreaming after sleep stages to highlight an important activity that happens during REM sleep, and Aristotle's beliefs about sleep are included to show that people have been attempting to understand sleep for a long time.

Explanation:

The section from the article that best explains how sleep can affect memories is likely the one titled 'Light Sleep Stages', as this section typically discusses the connection between sleep and memory consolidation. However, without the text of the article, it's difficult to provide a definitive answer.

The conclusion that is BEST supported by the paragraph from the section 'Flushing Out Harmful Toxins' is that sleep might be an important tool to keep people healthy. This conclusion is inferred from the mention of sleep playing a critical role in flushing out harmful toxins that can damage the brain and potentially stave off diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The author likely provides information about dreaming after introducing the sleep stages in order to 'highlight one activity, dreaming, that happens during REM sleep'. This progression ensures that readers possess a clear understanding of the sleep stages before delving into a significant occurrence (dreaming) during one of those stages.

The purpose of including Aristotle's beliefs about sleep is probably 'to show that people have tried to understand sleep for a long time'. This indicates that our curiosity and exploration of sleep aren't recent phenomena but have roots in ancient thought and inquiry.

In Animal Farm, how does Orwell make fun of bureaucracy?

Answers

Final answer:

Orwell satirizes bureaucracy in Animal Farm through the actions of the pigs, who represent the bureaucratic elite. They manipulate the system to serve their interests, often changing rules to justify their self-serving actions. This depiction mocks bureaucracy as an institution that prioritizes its power and privileges over the welfare of the public.

Explanation:

In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the author satirizes bureaucracy through the character development and the storyline. The pigs represent the bureaucratic elite, and they manipulate the system to serve their interests, causing suffering and confusion among the other animals. The bureaucracy is depicted as incompetent, manipulative, and self-serving.

For instance, the character of Squealer, who serves as the bureaucrat in charge of propaganda, often alters the Seven Commandments to fit the pigs' self-serving actions. Similarly, Snowball's plans for a windmill, which initially aimed at improving the farm conditions, are used by Napoleon, the farm leader, to consolidate power and command over the animals.

These examples reveal how Orwell cleverly mocks bureaucracy, depicting it as an institution that is more interested in preserving its own power and privileges than in serving the people it's supposed to represent.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed...at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

What is the counterclaim of this argument?

A voluntour experience is a necessary addition to an individual's college resume.
The cost of voluntouring is minor in light of what one gets out of the experience.
There are better ways to make a difference than mixing tourism with volunteering.
Voluntourism is a worthwhile way to make a difference and travel the world.

Answers

Answer:

The correct answer is "Voluntourism is a worthwhile way to make a difference and travel the world.

Explanation: The claim throughout the article is that while those who "voluntour" think they are making a difference by their efforts, there are a wealth of problems that occur because of their presence. Answers

Answer:

the correct answer is A

Explanation:

In "Mother Tongue," Amy Tan demonstrates language bias towards her mother in option A.She believed her mother's thoughts were unimportant because she expressed them imperfectly.

In "Mother Tongue," Amy Tan, the author, reflects on her experiences with her mother, who is a Chinese immigrant with limited English proficiency. Tan's mother spoke English with an accent, and her grammar and syntax were sometimes awkward, making it difficult for others to understand her. However, Tan recognized that her mother's limitations in English did not mean that she was unintelligent or unimportant.

Tan confesses that she used to be ashamed of her mother's imperfect English and that she often corrected her mother's grammar and syntax. She came to realize that her mother's "broken" English was an essential part of her identity and the way she expressed herself. Tan also recognized that many people who have English as their second language face discrimination, and their lack of proficiency does not indicate a lack of intelligence. Thus, Amy Tan demonstrates language bias towards her mother by believing that her mother's thoughts were unimportant because she expressed them imperfectly.

Thus, the correct option is A.

Read the following passage:
People who are in favor of animal testing are essentially arguing that the capture and torture of living beings is something that we should celebrate.

The counter-argument in the passage above contains which logical fallacy?
A. Slippery slope
B. Straw man
C. Begging the question
D. False causality

Answers

Final answer:

The counter-argument in the passage uses a Straw man fallacy by misrepresenting the position of those in favor of animal testing.

Explanation:

The counter-argument described in the passage contains a logical fallacy known as a Straw man. This type of fallacy occurs when someone misrepresents an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack or refute. In this case, those who are in favor of animal testing are not necessarily arguing that "capture and torture" is something to celebrate. Instead, this incorrect or exaggerated representation of their position sidesteps the actual arguments in favor of animal testing, such as medical benefits, and sets up a simplified argument that's easier to criticize.
