A Child Called It
Part 1
In A Child Called It, there is a very odd progression. The mother seems to go from a very
loving, attentive person to an absolute monster. Some of the stories seem almost
unbelievable. What makes them even more unbelievable is that there is no apparent
reason for the mother to transform in such a radical way. Therefore, your assignment is:
Describe what you think could have happened. Write a minimum two paragraphs of the
events that led to the mother turning from a loving parent to a crazy psychopath.

Answer 1

Answer:

Catherine Roerva Pelzer is the antagonist of A Child Called “It”. For years, she abuses her son, Dave Pelzer, for reasons that are never made clear: she hits him, burns his arm, forces him to eat feces and vomit, and starves him for days at a time. While Dave suggests that Mother is a heavy drinker and may suffer from depression, he doesn’t offer any theories about why she singles him out for abuse, or what motivates her to continue abusing him year after year. Sometimes, her cruel behavior seems sloppy and half-accidental—for example, when she drunkenly stabs Dave. But on other occasions, the memoir shows that Mother’s cruelty is premeditated and cunningly designed to make Dave suffer as greatly as possible. Even more bafflingly, Mother sometimes treats Dave with love and tenderness and then returns to abusing him—again, readers never understand why. The result is that, even by the end of the memoir, Mother embodies evil, which can be neither explained nor understood. She’s a force of pure malevolence, which Dave must escape at all costs.

Answer 2

The mother's transformation in 'A Child Called It' might be attributed to underlying mental health issues and family dynamics, including stress or trauma, mental illness, substance abuse, and the lack of a support system.

In A Child Called It, the transformation of the mother from a loving and attentive parent to an abusive psychopath could be attributed to several factors. One possible reason might be underlying mental health issues. Mental illnesses, such as depression or bipolar disorder, can lead to drastic mood swings and changes in behavior. Additionally, stress or trauma in the mother's personal life might have gone unnoticed and untreated, leading to her erratic and abusive behavior towards her son. Such a transformation could also stem from substance abuse, which often exacerbates mental health problems and contributes to aggressive tendencies.Another contributing factor could be the dynamics within the family. Sudden changes in the family structure, such as divorce or financial difficulties, might have placed immense pressure on the mother, causing her to lash out. The lack of a support system and social isolation could have further deteriorated her mental state. It is also possible that she might have had a troubled past herself, where she experienced abuse or neglect, which can perpetuate a cycle of abuse. The comparison of her once nurturing behavior with her later cruelty makes the story even more harrowing and highlights the complexities of human psychology and familial relationships.

D

Explanation:

Answer:

The correct answer is option D) Coming to school each day, having the necessary materials, and doing homework.

Explanation:

The only sentence that maintains a parallel structure is option D. In order to achieve parallelism, the same grammar pattern should be used. In this case, the correct grammar pattern is gerund+modifiers (coming to school, having the necessary materials, doing homework)

In the rest of the options there is a break in the grammar patters as the same grammar structure is not used consistently as in option B) that mixes gerund+ modifiers with bare verb+modifiers (coming to school, have the necessary materials.)

Read the following excerpts in which Granny Weatherall, from Katherine Anne Porter's "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," and J. Alfred Prufrock, from T. S Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, assess their pasts:

God give a sign! For a second time there was no sign. Again no bridegroom and the priest in the house. She could not remember any other sorrow because this grief wiped them all away. Oh, no, there's nothing more cruel than this I'll never forgive it. She stretched herself with a deep breath and blew out the light.
-The Jlting of Granny Weatherall"' by Katherine Anne Porter

Shall I say, I have gone at dusk through narrow streets And watched the smoke that rises from the pipes Of lonely men in shirt-sleeves, leaning out of windows?. I should have been a pair of ragged claws Scuttling across the floors of silent seas.
- The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, by T.S. Eliot.

Which best states the theme that is developed in both excerpts?

A. Some grief must be endured.

B. Live life to the fullest.

C. Forgive and be happy.

D. Peace is in the present tense.

Answers

The theme that is developed in both excerpts include option A: Some grief must be endured.

Which best states the theme that is developed in both excerpts?

Prufrock is singularly lonely and so he observes loneliness around him. He thinks himself useless and ordinary so that's what he sees when he looks up at the windows and sees lonely men smoking their pipes.

Granny Weatherall (look at the name -- is it not symbolic of someone who endures all while wishing for something that seems never to be hers?), is every bit as Prufrock.

Moreover, she wants marriage and it is so deeply within her soul that all other grief is wiped away from her.

The central idea of the poem is to show how the battles and the aftermaths  get covered by the human. The poem describes the try of human as grass. The grass cover the battlefield means the memory and loss of war is covered by the human nature. They are not strongly memorized. People forget about their errors, like in the poem it is said as 'What is this,Where are we now?'. How could the opening scenes of Macbeth be changed to leave out a supernatural element

Answers

The witches in the beginning are the supernatural element. They tell Macbeth a prophecy that leads to everything after. If they change the witches to gossiping handmaids it would still work. They could be like “I heard the thane of candor is back and alive”. That type of stuff

The opening scenes of Macbeth could be altered by removing the supernatural element of the witches.

How might the removal of the witches impact the opening scenes of Macbeth?

Without the witches' presence, the opening scenes of Macbeth would lose their eerie and foreboding atmosphere. The disappearance of the prophetic predictions from the witches would eliminate the initial catalyst for Macbeth's ambitious and treacherous actions.

Also the absence of the witches' prophecies would likely alter the way Macbeth's character is portrayed and the path his actions take throughout the play. The focus of the opening scenes could shift to other aspects of the story such as Macbeth's relationships with other characters or the political landscape of Scotland.

A Streetcar Named Desire is a classic play set in New Orleans, focusing on Blanche DuBois' conflict with Stanley Kowalski. Major themes include the clash between illusions and reality and the decline of the Southern aristocracy. The vivid setting and strong character dynamics make this an enduring piece of American theater.

Review of A Streetcar Named Desire

A Streetcar Named Desire, written by Tennessee Williams, is a compelling play set in the vibrant and diverse city of New Orleans. It revolves around the complex interactions between the main characters:

Blanche DuBois: A fragile and fading Southern belle who moves in with her sister after losing her ancestral home.Stella Kowalski: Blanche's kind-hearted sister who is married to Stanley and represents the bridge between the old Southern gentility and the new robust American life.Stanley Kowalski: Stella's brutish husband, whose raw masculinity and aggressive behavior clash with Blanche's delusions of grandeur.Mitch: Stanley's friend who becomes romantically involved with Blanche but is ultimately disillusioned by her past.

The plot follows Blanche's visit to her sister Stella and her confrontations with Stella's husband Stanley, leading to a dramatic clash of wills and ultimately, a tragic resolution. Major themes and motifs of the play include the decline of the Southern aristocracy, the rawness of human primal instincts versus cultivated gentility, and the pursuit of illusion versus harsh reality.

New Orleans serves as a critical backdrop, with its sense of decay and vibrancy mirroring Blanche's inner turmoil and the clash of cultures that the characters embody. The streetcars named Desire and Cemeteries symbolize the inevitable journey from passionate pursuit of desires to the finality of death.

In my opinion, A Streetcar Named Desire is a masterpiece of American literature. Williams' adept writing, coupled with the powerful dramatic elements—such as the intense character dynamics, symbolic settings, and impactful dialogues—make it an unforgettable experience. The mix of tragic elements and realistic portrayals of human flaws adds to its timeless relevance.

I believe the sentence pattern is:

subject-verb-indirect object-direct object

The question is about finding the Sentence Pattern. The sentence 'Kelly and Jack jumped into the water and swam across the lake' follows the pattern of Subject-Verb, where 'Kelly and Jack' are the subjects, and 'jumped into the water' and 'swam across the lake' are the verbs.

The Subject-Verb sentence pattern is a fundamental structure in language. It comprises two essential components: the subject, which identifies the main topic or doer of the action, and the verb, which expresses the action or state of being. This pattern forms the core of sentences and allows for clear communication. It can be simple, like "She sings," or more complex, incorporating modifiers and objects. Understanding and using this pattern correctly is crucial for constructing coherent and meaningful sentences in various languages, aiding in effective communication and writing.

The sentence 'Kelly and Jack jumped into the water and swam across the lake' follows the pattern of Subject-Verb. In this sentence, 'Kelly and Jack' are the subjects undertaking the action, 'jumped into the water' and 'swam across the lake' are the verbs representing the actions they're carrying out. We don't have a direct or indirect object in this sentence, as there's no object that's being acted upon, nor is there any linking verb, predicate noun or adjective. So the pattern is Subject-Verb.

Final answer:

O'Neill uses dialogue in the exchange between the steward and the ben to set the mood and advance the plot, hinting at future conflict and creating an atmosphere of tension and uneasiness. The reaction of audiences and the other characters to this exchange further amplifies the tension and sets the pace for the rest of the narrative.

Explanation:

In the exchange between the steward and the ben in O'Neill's work, the author uses dialogue to advance the plot and increase tension, defining the conflict. This first scene sets the mood, or atmosphere, for the play as it moves from confidence to anxiety, creating a tense and uneasy atmosphere.

The steward's interaction and ensuing events introduce an element of foreshadowing, hinting at future developments in the plot. The dialogue here not only defines the mood but also helps establish authenticity and allows the reader an opportunity to 'witness' the scene and the characters directly.

Moreover, the reaction of other characters in the scene, assembled under the steward's nose, intensifies the tension, the anticipation, and the unease in the plot. The fact that this scene happens at the beginning of the story also makes it highly significant for setting the pace and tone for the entire narrative.
