What are 2 traditions practiced within your family?

1. We pass Christmas with family                                                                          2. for every Thanksgiving we all have to say something we are thankful for before eating

My family has annual cornhole competitions, where all the families gather together at our house and play.  The competition is broken up into tournaments, where the winners are placed in "uptown" and the losers are placed in "downtown".  At the end, there's always a trophy (carved and painted by our friend who's a carpenter).  It's really fun because everyone's so serious about it, and we have lots of food/drinks/snacks.

Also, my dad came up with the lame idea of having secret handshakes.  My sister got really into it, and now both of them make up a bunch of weird ones like the penguin, the elephant, the snowman, and the jellyfish (you do not want to know what those look like).

Not only that, but we always make sure to have a family meal together, with devotions every Monday.  Basically, that means taking turns clearing up the table and helping set up the silverware.  We even have the rule of no TV, no cell phone, and (for me) no books at the table.  There's family news too, where everyone takes turns sharing something positive and negative that happened to them during the day.  Each person is expected to bring something interesting to the table that they read or heard.

My family also has the tradition of hugging everyone we meet, especially if it's close relatives and friends.  God forbid that you forget to wrap your arms around someone and kiss their cheek, or they'll think you have no manners at all (rolls eyes).  I guess that's a Puerto Rican thing.

Oh, and don't forget the endless game nights that we have, personally hosted by my dad who's obsessed with exploding kittens, golf, nefarious, flux, Milborne, loot letter, phase ten, and other card games.  Sometimes we have movie nights where we take turns picking something that we want to watch.  My sister's usually in charge of popping the popcorn, while dad sets it up, I get the ice cream, and mom gets the blankets.

My dad has this tradition where we go on a "Daddy Date".  My sister and I get dressed up while he wears a suit and he basically spends some quality time with his daughters.  My mom loves this because it means that she gets to spend time alone in the house. We love it because we get to eat all the food we want and go to cool restaurants. ;)  I think it's a great way to get close to your kid.

As if that wasn't enough, my grandparents have this thing where they give my sister and I red enveloped containing money inside.  This can be for our birthday, Christmas, Chinese new year, etc. etc. I guess it's an Asian tradition, but I'm not complaining. ;)

I also read somewhere that this family had the tradition of squeezing each others’ hands three times to signal the three words “I love you.” On the day the daughter got married, the father squeezed her hand three times as he walked her down the aisle. According to sources, “Only she knew that this was happening, a tiny personal ritual lodged invisibly within one of the grandest and most public, and she says it was one of the most moving moments of her life.”  Anyway, I just thought that was pretty cool.

Hi! There are many tools and effective way for a writer to convey his/her intended message to the audience, here is a list of what I know and use for argumentative essays:

1. Emphasis through word connotations-some words can play powerfully to readers to focus in on a sentence or phrase. If you need to make a point to the readers, use positive, aggressive, powerful, negative word connotations to sway the audience. "the investigator observed the dark dripping blood from the old rag that now streamed along the mutilated body of the victim."

2. Syntax and Sentence Structure- you may have notice short choppy sentence in books and narratives. Writers do this for the purpose of emphasizing on a point. "and then there was none." The points they zoom in for the audience are usually important and can convey the intended message when used properly.

3. Rhetorical Questions- "But wouldn't you have done the same thing?" Rhetorical Q 's are used to emphasis, persuade, and influence the audience to do or think a certain way about a subject. This is a very powerful tool to convey a intended message to the audience.

4. Polysyndeton and Asyndeton- You may or may not have heard of this but (Polysyndeton) is the Repetition of conjunctions in a series of words (but, and, etc.) while (Asyndeton) is the Omission of conjunctions that normally join words or phrases (NO but, and , etc). This skill and tool can effectively place emphasis on a message. Asyndeton-"He carried the burden of a father, a worker, a friend, a partner" Polysyndeton- "to give a better opportunity to the workers and the bakers, the chef and the maid, the servant and the slave.

Meg is writing a personal essay for an assignment. What should she keep in mind while choosing a topic?

Her essay should be based on _____ .

a.) fictional characters or events
b.) real characters or events
c.) her personal opinions about possible future events
d.) her life experiences only

Answers

The correct option is b. Her essay should be based on real characters or events.

When writing a personal essay, it is important for Meg to choose a topic that is authentic and relatable to her own life. Personal essays typically revolve around real characters or events that have had a significant impact on the writer's life or perspective. This genre of writing allows the author to reflect on personal experiences, draw lessons from them, and convey a deeper meaning to the reader.

The other incorrect options are:

a.) fictional characters or events: Personal essays are nonfiction and should be based on true stories and real-life experiences. Introducing fictional elements would undermine the authenticity and purpose of a personal essay.

c.) her personal opinions about possible future events: While personal opinions can be part of a personal essay, they are most effective when grounded in real experiences. Speculation about the future does not typically form the core of a personal essay.

d.) her life experiences only: While personal essays often draw from the writer's life experiences, they are not limited to these. Writers can also reflect on real events involving other people or society at large, as long as they can provide a personal connection or perspective on these events.
