The Mouse
by Henry Hugh Munro “Saki” (excerpt)

[Theodoric Voler is traveling by train. His only fellow passenger is a woman who is sleeping. During the journey, Theodoric realizes to his dismay that a mouse has found its way into his clothes. He tries to remove it without undressing, but the task becomes too much for him to handle. He is too embarrassed to undress in front of the woman, so when she looks away, he undresses quickly behind a rug. He manages to get rid of the mouse, but the rug curtain falls down, waking the woman up, and Theodoric quickly pulls the rug up and covers himself to the neck.]

How much had she seen, Theodoric queried to himself, and in any case what on earth must she think of his present posture?

"I think I have caught a chill," he ventured desperately.

"Really, I'm sorry," she replied. "I was just going to ask you if you would open this window."

"I fancy it's malaria," he added, his teeth chattering slightly, as much from fright as from a desire to support his theory.

"I've got some brandy in my hold-all, if you'll kindly reach it down for me," said his companion.

"Not for worlds—I mean, I never take anything for it," he assured her earnestly.

"I suppose you caught it in the Tropics?"

Theodoric, whose acquaintance with the Tropics was limited to an annual present of a chest of tea from an uncle in Ceylon, felt that even the malaria was slipping from him. Would it be possible, he wondered, to disclose the real state of affairs to her in small instalments?

"Are you afraid of mice?" he ventured, growing, if possible, more scarlet in the face.

"Not unless they came in quantities, like those that ate up Bishop Hatto. Why do you ask?"

"I had one crawling inside my clothes just now," said Theodoric in a voice that hardly seemed his own. "It was a most awkward situation."

"It must have been, if you wear your clothes at all tight," she observed; "but mice have strange ideas of comfort."

"I had to get rid of it while you were asleep," he continued; then, with a gulp, he added, "it was getting rid of it that brought me to- -to this."

"Surely leaving off one small mouse wouldn't bring on a chill," she exclaimed, with a levity that Theodoric accounted abominable.

Evidently she had detected something of his predicament, and was enjoying his confusion. All the blood in his body seemed to have mobilized in one concentrated blush, and an agony of abasement, worse than a myriad mice, crept up and down over his soul. And as the reflection began to assert itself, sheer terror took the place of humiliation. With every minute that passed the train was rushing nearer to the crowded and bustling terminus where dozens of prying eyes would be exchanged for the one paralyzing pair that watched him from the further corner of the carriage. There was one slender despairing chance, which the next few minutes must decide. His fellow-traveler might relapse into a blessed slumber. But as the minutes throbbed by, that chance ebbed away. The furtive glance which Theodoric stole at her from time to time disclosed only an unwinking wakefulness.

"I think we must be getting near now," she presently observed.

Theodoric had already noted with growing terror the recurring stacks of small, ugly dwellings that heralded the journey's end. The words acted as a signal. Like a hunted beast breaking cover and dashing madly towards some other haven of momentary safety he threw aside his rug, and struggled frantically into his disheveled garments. He was conscious of dull suburban stations racing past the window, of a choking, hammering sensation in his throat and heart, and of an icy silence in that corner towards which he dared not look. Then as he sank back in his seat, clothed and almost delirious, the train slowed down to a final crawl, and the woman spoke.

"Would you be so kind," she asked, "as to get me a porter to put me into a cab? It’s a shame to trouble you when you’re feeling unwell, but being blind makes one so helpless at a railway station."

Answer 2
Final answer:

The author creates tension in 'The Mouse' through the protagonist's internal monologues and the dialogues between the characters. These elements reveal the protagonist's anxiety and embarrassment, which intensify the suspense and tension in the story.

Explanation:

In the story 'The Mouse' by Henry Hugh Munro, also known as Saki, the author creates tension primarily through the internal monologues of the protagonist, Theodoric Voler, and through the dialogues and interactions between the characters. The tension escalates as the protagonist finds himself in an embarrassing situation owing to a mouse in his clothing while sharing a train compartment with a sleeping woman. Theodoric's dilemmas and anxieties, his desperate attempts to hide his predicament, and his fear of public humiliation all contribute to the tension in the narrative.

For instance, the internal monologues, such as 'How much had she seen, Theodoric queried to himself, and in any case what on earth must she think of his present posture?' and 'Evidently she had detected something of his predicament, and was enjoying his confusion' enhances the tension and also provides character insight. The dialogue between Theodoric and the woman also exposes Theodoric's growing discomfort and intensifies the suspense.

So, in response to the question 'How does the author create tension in this story?', it can be concluded that both options C (through the dialogues and interactions of the characters) and D (through the internal monologues of the protagonist) are valid answers.

from Emma
by Jane Austen

Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy
disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly
twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.

She was the youngest of the two daughters of a most affectionate, indulgent father;
and had, in consequence of her sister's marriage, been mistress of his house from a very early
period. Her mother had died too long ago for her to have more than an indistinct remembrance
of her caresses, and her place had been supplied by an excellent woman as governess, who
had fallen little short of a mother in affection.

Sixteen years had Miss Taylor been in Mr. Woodhouse's family, less as a governess
than a friend, very fond of both daughters, but particularly of Emma. Between them it was more
the intimacy of sisters. Even before Miss Taylor had ceased to hold the nominal office of
governess, the mildness of her temper had hardly allowed her to impose any restraint; and the
shadow of authority being now long passed away, they had been living together as friend and
friend very mutually attached, and Emma doing just what she liked; highly esteeming Miss
Taylor's judgment, but directed chiefly by her own.

The real evils indeed of Emma's situation were the power of having rather too much
her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself; these were the disadvantages
which threatened alloy to her many enjoyments. The danger, however, was at present so
unperceived, that they did not by any means rank as misfortunes with her.

Sorrow came—a gentle sorrow—but not at all in the shape of any disagreeable
consciousness.—Miss Taylor married. It was Miss Taylor's loss which first brought grief. It was
on the wedding-day of this beloved friend that Emma first sat in mournful thought of any
continuance. The wedding over and the bride-people gone, her father and herself were left to
dine together, with no prospect of a third to cheer a long evening. Her father composed himself
to sleep after dinner, as usual, and she had then only to sit and think of what she had lost.

Question 5 (5.26 points)
In the future, which of the following is most likely to threaten Emma?

Question 5 options:

A. her affection for her father

B. her habit of getting her own way

C. her enjoyment of dinner

D. her friendship with Miss Taylor

Answers

Answer:

B. her habit of getting her own way

Explanation:

Emma was used to having things her own way

Final answer:

The main threat to Emma's future, according to Jane Austen's text, is her frequent habit of getting her own way due to her unchecked power and self-perception.

Explanation:

Based on the presented excerpt from Emma by Jane Austen, the most likely future threat to Emma among the given choices would be B. Her habit of getting her own way. The text explicitly states that 'The real evils indeed of Emma's situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself; these were the disadvantages which threatened alloy to her many enjoyments.' Despite her good qualities and comfortable life, Emma's tendency to get her own way and her overestimate of her own capabilities and judgment may lead to conflict or problems in the future.

Read the passage from "By the Waters of Babylon.” How can I tell what it was like—you do not know. It was there, in the red light, and they were too big to be houses. It was there with the red light upon it, mighty and ruined. I knew that in another moment the gods would see me. I covered my eyes with my hands and crept back into the forest. Surely, that was enough to do, and live. Surely it was enough to spend the night upon the cliff. The Forest People themselves do not come near. Yet, all through the night, I knew that I should have to cross the river and walk in the places of the gods, although the gods ate me up. My magic did not help me at all and yet there was a fire in my bowels, a fire in my mind. When the sun rose, I thought, "My journey has been clean. Now I will go home from my journey." But, even as I thought so, I knew I could not. If I went to the Place of the Gods, I would surely die, but, if I did not go, I could never be at peace with my spirit again. It is better to lose one's life than one's spirit, if one is a priest and the son of a priest.

Which conflicts occur in this passage? Select three options. Character vs. nature: The narrator must conquer the challenges of the landscape to visit the Place of the Gods.
Character vs. character: The narrator must face the Forest People, since they live directly on the route to the Place of the Gods
. Character vs. self: The narrator must convince himself that just seeing the Place of the Gods from a distance is not enough.
Character vs. society: The narrator must go to the Place of the Gods to satisfy his spirit because he is a priest’s son and must follow his father’s teachings.
Character vs. self: The narrator is overwhelmed with fear of what he sees coming from the Place of the Gods and momentarily retreats.

I, that am rudely stamp'd, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph;
I, that am curtail'd of this fair proportion,
Cheated of feature by dissembling nature,
Deformed, unfinish'd, sent before my time
Into this breathing world, scarce half made up,
1.The meaning of the word ambling is_________
A.To walk or stroll
B.To talk flirtatiously
C.To mumble absent-mindedly
D.To dance gracefully

The meaning of the word curtail'd is _________
A.To be increased by a small amount
B.To forcibly take away
C.To impose a restriction
D.To be deproved

Answers

Answer:

1. A

2. D

Explanation:

Amble means to stroll, he says he doesn't like walking strutting before a small child who is walking in a relaxed manner.

The meaning of curtail'd in the passage shows being deprived.

The word 'ambling' in the excerpt means 'to walk or stroll,' and 'curtail'd' means 'to be deprived.' Richard III uses these words to describe his lack of grace and physical harmony in contrast to the typical courtier.

In the excerpt from act I, scene I, of Richard III, the meaning of the word ambling is 'to walk or move at a slow, relaxed pace', which corresponds to option A, 'To walk or stroll.' This term describes a leisurely way of moving, often with a sense of ease and grace. Furthermore, the meaning of the word curtail'd is 'to be deprived of', which aligns with option D, 'To be deprived.' It signifies that something has been shortened or reduced in extent or quantity.

In at least 200 words, discuss the rhyme and rhythm of “The Bells” by Edgar Allan Poe. How does Poe’s use of both rhythm and rhyme in that poem affect tone, meaning, and theme?

Answers

Answer:

He uses the rhythm to imitate the sound of a beating heart. This brings on a sense of eeriness and fear. The rhyme is inconsistent and brings with it a sense of anticipation and constant change, leaving the reader wondering what will come next

Answer:

Rhythm is used as strong sound device by Poe in the Poem 'The Bells'. Each stanza is about different kind of bell, and the rhythm of each stanza represents how the bell rings. For example in the first stanza the "tinkle tinkle" of bells makes the reader read the stanza quickly. Urgency of the alarm bells is felt by the reader. In the second stanza the short line copy the musical quality of weddings bells in a royal wedding.

The rhythm of third stanza leaves the reader breathless. Final stanza represents gloominess and darkness of tolling bell. Combination and repetition of "bells bells bells" lets the reader hearing bells tolling. It is not the tinkling jingle of the sleigh bells or the music of wedding bells or the urgency of the alarm bells. Its slow and ponderous.
