In Beowulf, how does the character of hrothgar compare to Beowulf

Answers

Answer 1

Final answer:

Hrothgar is a benevolent king who contrasts with the young hero Beowulf, whose strength and desire for glory contrast Hrothgar's wisdom and limitations.

Explanation:

In Beowulf, Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, compared to Beowulf, represents a more mature and seasoned ruler who has faced long years of leadership and now requires assistance in dealing with the monster Grendel. Hrothgar is portrayed as a benevolent and wise king, who has built the great hall Heorot for his people, but he also symbolizes the limitations of a ruler in the face of overwhelming adversity. Conversely, Beowulf is the youthful hero, epitomizing the strength, courage, and idealism of a warrior ready to build his own legacy. He is driven by a desire for eternal glory and approaches challenges with fearless determination. Their characters are contrasted to highlight the evolution of a warrior to a king and the cyclical nature of heroism.

This question is based on the following passage. I was in the National Forest with my camera. The day was crisp, and the leaves were turning gold and red. When I spotted the white-tailed buck, I froze. He wasn't more than 15 yards from where I was standing. The wind must have been right, because he kept on browsing the mossy ground. I lifted my camera very slowly. Carefully, holding my breath, I lifted the camera to my eye. Turning the focus ring, I framed the deer's head. Just as I was ready to press the shutter release, the buck raised his head. He was looking my way with wide eyes. Click. I took the picture. An instant later, the deer bounded away into the forest. He took off, but I had the shot. Today, the framed photo of that buck hangs above our fireplace. What is the author implying in the phrase "the wind must have been right"? A. The deer was not able to pick up the scent of the author.
B. The author was fortunate to have his camera with him.
C. The deer was clearly not afraid of humans.
D. The author was worried the wind would disturb his shot.

That wants it down."

Answers

I think "The Pasture" by Robert Frost is the poem that expresses the spring season. The Spring has always been described as the birth of many animals or the mating season. It also refers to trees growing out their leaves after winter and autumn were able to have made them fall from the grown.  Also, spring also comes and goes along side the other seasons throughout the year.

The poems ‘Mending Wall’ and ‘The Pasture’ by Robert Frost portray spring differently: a time of reflection and boundary-setting in the former and a time of renewal and communal activity in the latter.

The question asks for the different views of spring expressed in Robert Frost's poems “Mending Wall” and “The Pasture. In “Mending Wall,” spring represents a time of mischief and questioning. The speaker uses the time when the wall is traditionally mended to question the necessity of walls, saying, “Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder / If I could put a notion in his head: ‘Why do they make good neighbours?’”

In contrast, in “The Pasture,” spring is portrayed as a time of renewal and pleasant chores. The speaker invites another to join in the simple, refreshing tasks of cleaning the pasture and caring for a calf, conveying a sense of joy and togetherness, “I shan’t be gone long.—You come too.” Thus, the different views of spring are accounted for by the respective contexts: one being a time of reflection and boundary-setting, while the other is a time of rejuvenation and communal activity.

Select two sonnets and show which form they are.

Answers

There are two types of sonnets: the Italian sonnet or Petrarchan sonnet and the English sonnet or Shakespearean sonnet. Aside from their origin, they differ in structure.

The Petrarchan sonnet is composed of an octave which is the first eight lines, followed by the sestet which is the last six lines. Its rhythm follows the pattern abba, abba, cdecde or cdcdcd. An example would be "London, 1802" by William Wordsworth.

The Shakespearean sonnet is composed of three quatrains followed by a couplet. Its rhythmic pattern is abab, cdcd, efef, gg. Example is Sonnet 73 (That Time of Year Thou Mayst).

“He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.” These lines from the Declaration of Independence are an example of the use of _______________. pathos theme logos thesis

Answers

The lines from the Declaration of Independence exemplify the use of logos. Logos appeals to logic and reason, and in this context, it is used to outline the legal and rational basis for American independence by listing specific grievances against the King of Great Britain.

The Declaration of Independence is a historical document that sets forth the reasons the American colonies chose to secede from British rule. It includes a series of complaints against the King of Great Britain, suggesting that he has acted against the best interests of the colonies by refusing to approve laws that are essential for the public’s welfare, and hindering the legislative process by withholding his assent unless conditions are met that he stipulates. These actions of the King are laid out in a logical structure to make a clear and rational argument for independence, embodying the concept of logos—the appeal to logic and reason. This methodical enumeration of facts is used to persuade the reader of the legitimacy of the colonists’ cause and the necessity of establishing a government that derives its powers from the consent of the governed, as opposed to the tyrannical rule imposed by the King.

Analyze the major themes of the essay "What White Publishers Won't Print" by Zora Neale Hurston.

Answers

Hurston argues that the American society has misapprehended black people, even to the present day. And it's not because it is hard to understand and accept black people, but because the white majority is entirely indifferent to them. They don't care about black people's preoccupations, struggles, internal problems. And it isn't only white Americans who employ such an attitude. It is also colored immigrants and people of other ethnicities who join in.

Hence the misconceptions about black people. They are still being perceived in the context of their former slavery. They are almost never seen as heterogeneous population, where there are educated and uneducated, skilled and unskilled. Thereby the white majority reinforces the ancient narrative that blacks don't even deserve education, as it won't improve their inherently corrupt nature

The media don't help either. Their portrayal of black people is uniform. Of course, their work is commercial, and they won't make stories that don't sell. But that only means that the general audience is not interested in ordinary, everyday, human stories about black people. It is not only a snobbish perspective; it is a socially detrimental perspective which excludes a huge population which is a part of America.

Answer:

The major themes explored in "What White Publishers Won’t Print" are racial discrimination against minorities by white Americans and how publishers at the time wouldn’t publish the literary works of minorities unless they involved some stereotypical racial conflicts:

They [publishers] will sponsor anything that they believe will sell. They shy away from romantic stories about Negroes and Jews because they feel that they know the public indifference to such works, unless the story or play involves racial tension.

In her essay, Hurston attacks the illogical perceptions of minorities by white Americans. For example, she describes their lack of interest in learning about the “internal emotions and behavior of the minorities.” She states some stereotypical views that white Americans have toward minorities and how they feel that African Americans and other races are not intelligent, civilized, or moral:

Yes, he certainly knows his higher mathematics, and he can read Latin better than many white men I know, but I cannot bring myself to believe that he understands a thing that he is doing. It is all an aping of our culture. All on the outside. You are crazy if you think that it has changed him inside in the least. Turn him loose, and he will revert at once to the jungle. He is still a savage, and no amount of translating Virgil and Ovid is going to change him. In fact, all you have done is to turn a useful savage into a dangerous beast.

Hurston also describes how white Americans perceive African Americans as animals who can mirror the (white) American lifestyle but cannot comprehend or blend into it.

Read the poem “I’m Nobody” by Emily Dickinson and answer the question that follows.

I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you — Nobody — too?
Then there’s a pair of us
Don’t tell! they’d advertise — you know!

How dreary — to be — Somebody!
How public — like a Frog —
To tell one’s name — the livelong June —
To an admiring Bog!

Why is the frog simile an effective image of the “Somebody” in Dickinson’s poem?

It blends in and does not disturb the bog.
It’s ugly, but people still admire it.
It croaks loudly, calling attention to itself.
It has many positive qualities that should be admired.

Answers

The first poem he uses rhyme

1. The poet uses "enjambment" to continue lines of poetry into the next without stopping. So the correct option is c.

2. The frog simile is an effective image of the “Somebody” in Dickinson’s poem because "It croaks loudly, calling attention to itself." So the correct option is c.

1. In Adrienne Rich's poem "For the Dead," the poet uses enjambment to continue lines of poetry into the next without stopping. Enjambment allows the thought or phrase to flow beyond the end of a line and into the next, creating a sense of movement and continuity.

For example, the lines "I have always wondered about the left-over energy, the way water goes rushing down a hill" flow seamlessly into each other without a pause.

2. In Emily Dickinson's poem "I'm Nobody," the frog simile is an effective image of the "Somebody" because it croaks loudly, calling attention to itself.

The comparison to a frog emphasizes how a "Somebody" constantly seeks public attention and admiration, much like how a frog's croaking is loud and draws attention in the stillness of a bog. This simile effectively captures the intrusive and public nature of being "Somebody" compared to the quiet, unnoticed existence of being "Nobody."

Left arm bent upwards signifies a right turn.

The answer is a right turn. When a bicyclist is going to make a right turn, he or she should use the left hand bent upward, to let drivers behind him know.

Another way to indicate a right turn is to use the right arm extended horizontally. Either way, the bicyclist should make the turn signal with enough time for the other drivers to see it and take precautions.

The human cloning debate is absolutely pointless and potentially devastating. So far, cloning experiments have murdered 100% of all the animals tested. Do we really want humans subjected to such a dangerous and unproven science? We don't if we value human life! Even if cloning does work, this technology could be abused by fans of celebrities and athletes who attempt to steal DNA from their idols to produce unauthorized clones. The very definition of what it means to be human could be destroyed if a human clone were produced. Don't believe in the fictionalized version of clones in movies and books. What does "absolutely pointless and potentially devastating" mean? These statements are value judgments, which means they are not universally true, but determined in relation to something.
Do you have any evidence that the 100% of tested animals were murdered?
The argument that "we value human life" is manipulative. People who advocate cloning also claim they value human life.
There is no point in supposing that cloning would be abused. The societies can create legislation to prevent potential abuse.
It is hardly provable claim that something would be the end of humanity.

They were not available in such numbers that small colonies could possess them. The cruisers carried the colonists to their new worlds and made periodic visits, running on tight schedules, but they could not stop and turn aside to visit colonies scheduled to be visited at another time; such a delay would destroy their schedule and produce a confusion and uncertainty that would wreck the complex interdependence between old Earth and the new worlds of the frontier.

The humor arises from the wordplay and self-deprecating comment the servant makes, which Capulet regards as unintentionally witty. It's funny to Capulet since it highlights the servant's lack of self-awareness and inadvertent admission of his own simplicity.

Final answer:

Capulet finds humor in the servant's witty self-reference suggesting he doesn't need to trouble Peter to find logs, indicating a level of self-awareness or mock modesty.

Explanation:

Lord Capulet finds the exchange with the Second Servant funny because the servant makes a witty remark about his own intelligence. The servant humorously suggests he is smart enough to find the logs and doesn't need to trouble Peter for it. This can be seen as a self-deprecating joke, implying that he might be a 'loggerhead', an old term for a blockhead or fool. However, based on the context provided in the question, the actual reason why Capulet finds it amusing was not explicitly mentioned among the options, as none include the information about a self-deprecating joke or a direct connection to the exchange provided.
