in the story "The Nest"

by Violet Sorzano

Randall squinted up through the trees, trying to gauge the time, but gave up quickly. He should have paid attention when his father taught the family to read the position of the sun. He should have paid attention, too, before sneaking off this morning on his first solo hike, forgetting the whistle his mother stressed he always bring.

He pictured his parents now at their camp beneath the tree with the eagle’s nest, wondering where he was. Randall was wondering the same thing. Lost and out of food, he feared he had but a few hours before darkness closed in, trapping him in the bitter cold with the creatures of the night.

He closed his eyes to fight back tears, when he heard it in the distance. Water! His father’s words came flowing into his mind; one tip he actually remembered. “If you’re ever lost, find a river and follow it.”

In a flash, he was on his feet, scaling fallen trees, tearing through brush, frantically following the sound. The sky grew darker, but the noise grew louder, and Randall, tired and scared, forged ahead until he found it. He reached the river bank and was mulling his next move when a sudden splash caught his eye.

A majestic eagle rose from the water, soaring skyward with a freshly caught fish in its talons. Could it be the same eagle nested above his camp? It glided triumphantly into a high nest a short distance away, eager to greet its family. Randall smiled, equally triumphant, eager to do the same as he followed the eagle’s flight.

In the distance, he saw his mother, his whistle clutched in her hand.

An essay in which the writer's personality is clearly distinguishable (option C) is not the best example of clarity as it relates to essay writing.  The thing is that the distinguishability of the writer's personality has nothing to do with clarity of his or her writing.

identify the dangling modifier in this sentence. Scrambling for the touchdown, the ball was dropped on the 10-yard line.

Answers

Correct sentence: The ball was dropped on the 10-yard line, while scrambling for the touchdown. Explanation: Modifier was the part after the comma because it had no subject.
Final answer:

The phrase 'Scrambling for the touchdown' in the sentence 'Scrambling for the touchdown, the ball was dropped on the 10-yard line' is a dangling modifier. It is because 'the ball', which is the grammatical subject of the sentence, is not doing the scrambling. The sentence could be corrected by specifying who is doing the scrambling.

Explanation:

In the sentence: 'Scrambling for the touchdown, the ball was dropped on the 10-yard line', the phrase 'Scrambling for the touchdown' is a dangling modifier. This is because the grammatical subject of the sentence ('the ball') is not the entity doing the action of 'scrambling'. To correct this, we could revise the sentence to clarify who or what is 'scrambling'. A possible revision could be: 'Scrambling for the touchdown, the player dropped the ball on the 10-yard line'.

what is Frederick Douglass viewpoint on slavery?

Answers

After Douglass escaped, he wanted to promote freedom for all slaves. He published a newspaper in Rochester, New York, called The North Star. It got its name because slaves escaping at night followed the North Star in the sky to freedom. Douglass's goals were to "abolish slavery in all its forms and aspects, promote the moral and intellectual improvement of the COLORED PEOPLE, and hasten the day of FREEDOM to the Three Millions of our enslaved fellow countrymen." How else did Douglass promote freedom?

In the years before the American Civil War, Frederick Douglass vehemently advocated and opposed slavery in his writings, lectures, and publications.

What is slavery?

When someone is regarded as someone else's property, that is considered slavery. Typically, this person is referred to as a slave, and the owner is known to as a slavemaster.

The primary takeaway from Douglass's speech is the fact that it's hypocritical to observe July 4 as a day of liberty and autonomy while slaves don't really enjoy it either. The Fourth of July festivities are ruined by the existence of slavery. He tried to show it to be harsh, strange, abnormal, wicked, and unjust.

According to Frederick, it was told that slavery was unjust and should not be followed in the upcoming time period. And it should be abolished completely from the North as well as from the South.

Facts from Shakespeares life that influenced his ability to Illuminate Human Experience.

Answers

Final answer:

Shakespeare's personal and professional experiences in Stratford and London, together with his engagement with the social and political issues of his time, significantly influenced his works. These experiences enabled him to delve deeply into the human experience and express profound insights that continue to resonate today.

Explanation:

The life of William Shakespeare undoubtedly influenced his ability to illuminate human experience through his plays and sonnets. Shakespeare's dual residence in Stratford and London, his career as an actor, playwright, and partner in a leading acting company, provided him with a wealth of experiences that he translated into his writing.

Shakespeare's insights into the human condition are exemplified in his plays’ exploration of themes such as love, death, ambition, and betrayal, often expressed through the nuanced interplay of light and darkness. His own experiences, such as the instruction to actors seen in Hamlet, reflect the conventions and challenges of the Elizabethan era, while his thoughtful observations about life, as rendered in works like As You Like It, reveal a deep understanding of the roles individuals play throughout their lives.

Additionally, Shakespeare's capacity to comment on topical issues of his day through satire without attracting censorship is a testament to his clever use of his artistic platform. His works continue to resonate with audiences and have influenced countless other artists and writers, proving his enduring legacy in illuminating the complexities of human experience.
