Answers

A) "To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity." This sentence is an instance of parallellism. The same pattern is repeated- look at the underlined words-. Subject + to be + complement. However, this pattern is used in "your celebration is a sham". In the other two structures the verb to be has been omitted and a comma has been used, instead. " your boasted liberty, (is) an unholy license; your national greatness, (is) swelling vanity." The verb to be can be taken out since it can be easily retrieved from the context. If it is ellided, it should be replaced by a comma.

1. Why is the idea of playing a role or acting a part so important to Hamlet over the course of the play? How does role-playing affect several major events in the plot and the relationships between various characters?

2. Compare and contrast Hamlet and Fortinbras in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. How are the two figures alike? How are they different? What do readers and audience members come to understand as a result of the similarities and differences that exist between these characters? Your answer should be two or more paragraphs.

Answers

one

Of all the characters in Hamlet, the one that play acts the most is Hamlet himself. Why?

Look at his surroundings. His mother thinks he is mad because of his father's death and her quick marriage to Claudius. That has just enough truth for us to give it a very quick nod.

Polonius (who was once a very wise man -- he had to be since he was a trusted councilor to Hamlet(Sr) ) thinks it is his daughter who caused the madness. Every young man (again remember Hamlet is a teen) endures the lasting sadness of a first love unfulfilled.  Perhaps even driven mad by that first love. Polonius may be a fool, but his observations should not be completely ignored.

While on the subject of Polonius, you might want to make use of Hamlet's exchange with him. I remember that scene being a bit longer than what I just read beginning on line 165 in Act II Scene II. It should be longer than 30 lines, but there is enough there to get the idea that Hamlet is covering up something by acting the mad one.

So Hamlet has to resort to subtle subterfuge to get at the truth. And the directions he gives leads us to see that he knows quite a bit about the art of playacting.

Claudius is uncertain, but he's willing to test just about any theory that comes his way.

Is Claudius irreligious? How can he be when he attempts to pray.

Is Claudius totally without feeling? How can that be? First of all he shows some slight affection towards Gertrude in Act II Scene two after Rosecrans and Guildenstern have been dismissed.

Two

I can't do anything much between the similarities and differences on Fortinbras and Hamlet. What you find on the net should be able to guide you. I have never thought much about Fortinbras but a bit of his nature is revealed in Act II Scene (you've just been there) when Voltemond tells Claudius what has happened in Norway and the anticipated trip to Poland. I can only think of Fortinbras in terms of the ending when he and Horatio are the only main characters still alive. That really is not much to go on.

Hello there!

One of Lincoln's opinions is that USA is a nation founded on the idea that all men are created equal and that there is no difference. Even though this is in the Declaration of Independence, it can be argued that this is not true since America still has slavery.

In addition, he believes that the government by the people will continue on. This statement, at the time, is supported by the fact that the Union is doing everything they can to preserve and keep the nation.  :)

Finally, another opinion by Lincoln in this speech is that the world will not remember what is said at Gettysburg. Nowadays, this is not true, because it is one of the most studied speeches in the history of America.

Federalist Papers: No. 1
General Introduction
For the Independent Journal
Author: Alexander Hamilton

This idea will add the inducements of philanthropy to those of patriotism, to heighten the solicitude which all considerate and good men must feel for the event. Happy will it be if our choice should be directed by a judicious estimate of our true interests, unperplexed and unbiased by considerations not connected with the public good. But this is a thing more ardently to be wished than seriously to be expected. The plan offered to our deliberations affects too many particular interests, innovates upon too many local institutions, not to involve in its discussion a variety of objects foreign to its merits, and of views, passions and prejudices little favorable to the discovery of truth.

Which of the following statements supports the idea presented in this quote from the excerpt?

Happy will it be if our choice should be directed by a judicious estimate of our true interests, unperplexed and unbiased by considerations not connected with the public good.

Based on the excerpt, why might the author have titled the book A Rumor of War?

Answers

Because the Vietnam War was fought in an especially brutal and untraditional way

The author likely titled the book A Rumor of War to reflect the disconnect between the public perception and the complex, often grim reality of combat, which is echoed in the themes of disillusionment and futility prevalent in the post-war cultural commentary. The elusive and biased nature of war narratives could have influenced the title.

Based on the various excerpts provided, it is possible that the author titled the book A Rumor of War to encapsulate the indirect and fragmented ways in which the realities of war reach people. The particular use of 'rumor' suggests an understanding that is not firsthand but spread through hearsay, which can often be unreliable or incomplete. This aligns with the themes of disillusionment, a sense of futility, and the emotional rollercoaster that the text mentions were common in the cultural commentary post-First World War. Given that James found it more and more challenging to write fiction during the war, these emotional shifts could have been mirrored in his work, leading to a title that reflects the murky, intangible, and often distorted nature of war narratives. Furthermore, the title might also suggest an investigation into the public perception of war versus its reality. The term 'rumor' may hint at the difference between the war's portrayal and its true brutal nature. The notion that the author might have had a hidden agenda, as found in one of the excerpts, relates to the idea of selective storytelling. The title thus might also be a subtle acknowledgment of the gap between the public's understanding of war and the complexity that the soldiers like James experienced. The contrast between the supposed heroism associated with war and its grim reality is a theme that literature after major wars often explores.

Read the excerpt from Animal Farm.

As winter drew on, Mollie became more and more troublesome. She was late for work every morning and excused herself by saying that she had overslept, and she complained of mysterious pains, although her appetite was excellent. On every kind of pretext she would run away from work and go to the drinking pool, where she would stand foolishly gazing at her own reflection in the water. But there were also rumours of something more serious. One day, as Mollie strolled blithely into the yard, flirting her long tail and chewing at a stalk of hay, Clover took her aside.

"Mollie,” she said, "I have something very serious to say to you. This morning I saw you looking over the hedge that divides Animal Farm from Foxwood. One of Mr. Pilkington's men was standing on the other side of the hedge. And—I was a long way away, but I am almost certain I saw this—he was talking to you and you were allowing him to stroke your nose. What does that mean, Mollie?”

"He didn't! I wasn't! It isn't true!” cried Mollie, beginning to prance about and paw the ground.

"Mollie! Look me in the face. Do you give me your word of honour that that man was not stroking your nose?”

"It isn't true!” repeated Mollie, but she could not look Clover in the face, and the next moment she took to her heels and galloped away into the field.

A thought struck Clover. Without saying anything to the others, she went to Mollie's stall and turned over the straw with her hoof. Hidden under the straw was a little pile of lump sugar and several bunches of ribbon of different colours.

Three days later Mollie disappeared. For some weeks nothing was known of her whereabouts, then the pigeons reported that they had seen her on the other side of Willingdon. She was between the shafts of a smart dogcart painted red and black, which was standing outside a public-house. A fat red-faced man in check breeches and gaiters, who looked like a publican, was stroking her nose and feeding her with sugar. Her coat was newly clipped and she wore a scarlet ribbon round her forelock. She appeared to be enjoying herself, so the pigeons said. None of the animals ever mentioned Mollie again.

What conflicts are presented in this excerpt? Select THREE options!

-Mollie is in conflict with herself because she wants to leave the farm.
-Mollie is in conflict with Clover because Clover sees Mollie with the farmer.
-Mollie is in conflict with the farmer because he wants her to live on his farm.

The answer is:

1. Object of the preposition – noun or noun phrase following a preposition

3. Predicate noun – the word or phrase in the predicate that renames the subject

4. Direct object – the receiver of the verb’s action

6. Indirect object – to or for whom or what something is done

7. Appositive – a word or phrase immediately following and renaming another word or phase

8. Possessive noun – a word or phrase that shows ownership of something or someone

To further illustrate the answer, let us see some examples:

1. Object of the preposition: He is always talking about us. / He is always talking about what he expects from this trip.

2. Subject: He is always talking about us. / Thinking of leaving makes me sad.

3. Predicate noun: Jane is a nurse. / Joseph may become my husband soon.

1. OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION:  the noun or noun phrase following a preposition. For example: under the table (table is the object or noun - under is the preposition)

5. SUBJECT OF GERUND: a possessive word or phrase immediately preceding a gerund subject. In addition, a gerund is a verb that functions as a noun and it can also act as the subject in a sentence. Gerunds always end in "ing".

6. INDIRECT OBJECT: to or for whom or what something is done. It can be a person or a thing that the action of a verb is performed for or directed to. For example: He gave a flower to Ana. (to Ana is the indirect object).

7. APPOSITIVE: the word or phrase immediately following and renaming another word or phrase. It describes the word or phrase in another way. For example: Ben, my best friend, lives next door. (my best friend is an appositive of Ben).

8. POSSESSIVE NOUN: a word or phrase that shows ownership of something or someone. It is used with nouns referring to people, groups of people, countries, or animals so as to show "belonging" between one thing and another. In order to form the possessive, it is necessary to add apostrophe + s to the noun. For example: Peter's mother is my aunt.
