Nights and Dragons— From the memoir of author Abigail Prynne 1 I sit at my desk listening to thunder growl outside my window. Flashes of light burst through the darkness, and wind races past my window. The thrilling combination of sight and sound conjures up visions of dragons roaring proudly, breathing fire, and soaring across the midnight sky. Dragons first fascinated me when I was a little girl. They have followed me ever since. The magnificent creatures appeared in storybooks I read in the library, paintings I saw in museums, movies I watched in the theater, and the dreams I had in my sleep. By the time I was thirteen, one question consumed me. I wanted to know if dragons ever existed, so I set out on a quest for facts. 2 As I started my research, I discovered many skeptics. Scientists presented evidence to show why dragons could not—and did not—exist. They explained that it would be impossible for dragons to fly because they would be too big. They laughed at the idea of dragons breathing fire. They pointed out that no other animal has ever done this. They said that if dragons had lived, someone would have found remains somewhere in the world. No bones about it, there were plenty of logical explanations. It would have been easy for me to accept that the only place dragons ever existed was in the imaginations of those who believed. 3 I could have given up, but I thought about my grandmother. She always told me that "people who believe that science is the answer to everything are missing out on everything else." With her words in mind, I searched some more. There were many facts that hinted that dragons may not be fictional. I noticed that cultures across the world all described dragons in similar ways. This was odd because they had no way to communicate with each other. I found dragons mentioned in more than just stories. They appeared in old legal papers, in the travel logs of Marco Polo, and in the Bible. I saw that the Chinese calendar uses a different animal each year. Dragons are included along with eleven real animals. I began to believe it was a real possibility that all of these people were talking about a creature that actually existed. 4 With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. I found that some experts disagreed with popular arguments against dragons. They suggested that a dragon could have four stomachs like a cow. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. This would give it the ability to fly. If it forced out air when diving toward the earth, it might release gases which could ignite into flame. When the animal died, the stomachs would release strong acids that would dissolve its dead body over time. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way. 5 I doubt we will ever truly know whether dragons existed. There may always be two sides to the fiery debate. Some will say the stories come from active imaginations. Some will believe with all their hearts that the legendary creatures roamed our ancient world. I don't know for certain which side to believe, but the sound and fury of a night like this makes me smile. It rekindles my childhood dreams and keeps the exciting possibility alive. Which sentence from paragraph 4 makes an explicit statement without offering any implicit suggestions? With renewed hope that there was some truth to the legends, I looked for new research. If it created stomach gases like birds, it might create enough to lift itself off the ground. Biologists backed up these ideas with sketches and models based on known animals. Not everyone agreed with these ideas, but many of the things we accept about dinosaurs and other extinct species started the same way.

What are Biologists?

A scientist who studies biology is known as a biologist. Whether it be a single cell, a multicellular creature, or a group of interdependent populations, life on Earth is of interest to biologists. They often have a particular research emphasis and specialize in a certain area of biology, such as molecular biology, zoology, or evolutionary biology (e.g., studying malaria or cancer).

The goal of fundamental research conducted by biologists is to increase our understanding of the natural world. They use the scientific method, an empirical approach to evaluating theories, to conduct their study. Their findings could be valuable for a particular objective, like biotechnology, which aims to create human-useful medicinal items.

The majority of biologists in today's world hold one or more academic degrees, such as a bachelor's degree and a more advanced degree, such as a master's or PhD. Similar to other scientists, biologists can be found working in a variety of fields in the commercial, public, and nonprofit sectors of the economy.

Answer: Tranquil contentment among all of us, as we didn't know for months. This passage understates happiness that other people felt that the obnoxious person was put out of commission, especially since he had been monopolizing all the girls in town.  which made it look that the partiality of providence for an undeserving reptile had reached a point where it was open to criticism this understatement explains the disgust of his fellow acquaintances of . How his boat blowing up far from putting him out of use, made him more useful or important in the favors of society.

Mark branleist please.

Answer:

The answer is explained below.

Explanation:

The question refers to this excerpt:

No girl could withstand his charms. He "cut out" every boy in the village. When his boat blew up at last, it diffused a tranquil contentment among us such as we had not known for months. But when he came home the next week, alive, renowned, and appeared in church all battered up and bandaged, a shining hero, stared at and wondered over by everybody, it seemed to us that the partiality of Providence for an undeserving reptile had reached a point where it was open to criticism.

Mark Twain was an American writer, famous by writing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, among many others. Understatement means to represent something less strongly than what it really is. In the excerpt, it is expressed first in "tranquil contentment among us such as we had not known for months," where happiness of other fellows is apparently understated pointing out that he had taken all the girls attention in town. Another example is "it seemed to us that the partiality of Providence for an undeserving reptile had reached a point where it was open to criticism" which explains the feelings (specially disgust) of people around him.

When we do not use resources wisely, it can be unhealthy for humans. So it is important to treat the environment with care. Chemicals that we use for farming and lawn care can have harmful effects on the environment, and there are ways to reduce these dangers. Use fewer harmful chemicals, or use chemicals in a more responsible way. This should help prevent hazards to human health. Everyone needs water, so we must protect it by decreasing our use of toxic chemicals. Conservationists recommend people start compost piles. Compost is made by decayed food and other natural things that humans use. It is often used to help plants grow without using chemicals or polluting the earth. As the human population increases, the amount of resources we use will also increase. However, many of the resources available on the earth are limited. This is why protecting the earth is important. The “Big Dig”

The “Big Dig” (the Central Artery/Tunnel Project) has been complex and challenging. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, this tunnel is eight lanes wide and three-and-a-half miles long. What is most amazing about this tunnel is that it is constructed under a major highway and skyscrapers located in Boston’s financial district.

Construction crews used “clamshell excavators” during this dig. These machines carved narrow trenches, and then a special substance was pumped into the trench to keep the dirt from caving in. Finally, steel beams were lowered into the trench and concrete was pumped in.

One problem that engineers faced while constructing the tunnel is the fact that the soil beneath Boston is extremely loose and soggy. Engineers solved this dilemma by freezing the soil and pumping very cold water into pipes beneath the city. To strengthen the soil even further, a special type of glue was injected into the ground to help with the consolidation of the soil.

23
Which phrase best defines the word excavator as used in the passage?
A.
a device used to measure underground temperatures
B.
a device used to level uneven surfaces
C.
a device used to move heavy objects
D.
a device used to dig holes

Answers

Final answer:

The word 'excavator' used in the passage refers to 'a device used to dig holes', consistent with its use in construction and archaeology to remove soil for exploration or to create room for structures.

Explanation:

The phrase that best defines the word excavator as used in the passage is 'a device used to dig holes'. The passage describes how construction crews used 'clamshell excavators' to carve narrow trenches during the construction of the 'Big Dig'. The purpose of these machines was to excavate, or dig, the earth to create space for the tunnel's structure. This use of the excavator is consistent with other applications in construction and archaeology, where the primary objective is to remove soil or rock materials from a site, often to uncover what lies beneath or to create room for structures like tunnels or wells.

Which of these is something that all the poems in the reading have in
common?

A. lambic meter

B. Rhyming stanzas

C. Themes of hope

D. Images of nature

Answers

Images of nature is the answer.Nature provides vivid images in poems and poets use them to make readers have profound effects upon people´s senses. All poems no matter the literary movements they are coming from, have images of nature at least once in their stanzas. They cause feelings of awe, amazament and mellancolly sometimes.Poetry is all about that.

"The correct answer is C. Themes of hope  is something that all the poems in the reading have in common.

To determine the common element among all the poems in the reading, one must analyze the content and structure of each poem.

A. Lambic meter is a type of poetic meter characterized by a specific rhythmic pattern. Not all poems are required to have this meter, and it is not a universal feature that all poems share. Therefore, it cannot be the correct answer.

B. Rhyming stanzas are a common poetic device, but not all poems use rhyme as a structural element. Free verse, for example, often does not rhyme. Since the question asks for a characteristic that is true for all the poems, this cannot be the correct answer unless it is explicitly stated that every poem in the reading uses rhyming stanzas.

C. Themes of hope are a broad concept that can be present in various forms within different poems. If the reading includes a diverse selection of poems, the theme of hope could be a unifying thread that ties them all together, even if the styles, structures, and forms of the poems vary. This would be the correct answer if, upon reviewing the poems, one finds that each poem conveys a sense of hope or optimism in its own way.

D. Images of nature are also common in poetry, but they are not a requirement for a poem to be considered a poem. Poems can cover a wide range of subjects, including urban landscapes, personal emotions, abstract concepts, and more. Therefore, images of nature cannot be assumed to be present in all poems unless the reading specifically focuses on nature poetry.

In conclusion, the most likely commonality among a diverse set of poems would be a theme, such as hope, which can be interpreted and expressed in various ways across different poetic works. This makes C. Themes of hope the most probable answer to the question."

Mercutio uses puns to make fun of Nurse’s appearance. Nurse uses puns to request her fan from Peter. Nurse uses puns to mock Benvolio and Mercutio.

Answers

Answer:

Mercutio uses puns to make fun of Nurse’s appearance.

Explanation:

There's not much to explain. The text literally says:

Mercutio: Good Peter, to hide her face; for her fan’s the fairer face.

If you didn't get that -- then basically, Mercutio said the Nurse's fan looks better than her face. He must have thought it was a pretty punny and clever response.

Mercutio employs puns to mock the Nurse's appearance in a scene from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

In the scene you're referring to, Mercutio uses puns to make fun of the Nurse's appearance. This occurs in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The interaction features Mercutio's witty repartee as he compares the Nurse's face unfavorably to her fan, implying that the fan is prettier. Nurse's exchanges with other characters, though often humorous, are more straightforward and less reliant on puns.

Final answer:

Academic writing is a formal style of writing used in academic and professional spheres that is fact-based and objective. This differs from personal or creative writing, which can be more narrative in nature, often reflecting personal stories or expressions.

Explanation:

"Academic writing" refers to a style of expression that researchers, scholars, students, and professionals use to define intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and specific study areas. It is usually characterised by the use of formal tone, evidence-based arguments, preciseness, and objectivity. It often includes the integration of evidence from credible sources, portrayed through a structured format.

In contrast, other types of writing like personal writing allow for a more informal narrative, reflecting personal experiences or views, often without the need for external evidence. When you're producing personal writing, it tells your unique story and allows for greater freedom in style and content.

Similarly, genres like creative writing may lack the structure and formality of academic writing as these pieces are intended to be imaginative or expressive. A scientific paper may require creativity in terms of experiment design, but the results are typically presented following strict guidelines ensuring brevity, conciseness, and accuracy without personal interpretations or biased narration.
