"...because women do feel themselves aggrieved, oppressed, and fraudulently deprived of their most sacred rights..."

Stanton’s use of phrases like “fraudulently deprived of their most sacred rights” is an example of _____.

A. connotative language
B. denotative language
C. figurative language
D. technical language

Answers

Answer 1

The correct option is option A ("Connotative language").

Connotation refers to the implied significance of words beyond the literal meaning that can be found in a dictionary (denotative). Language can have positive, negative, or neutral connotations depending on the context in which it's used. Words carry an emotional and cultural weight that is crucial to convey a specific tone or meaning in our speech.

In this case, the phrase wouldn't have had the same effect if the words "fraudulently", "deprived", or "sacred" were replaced with softer synonyms.

"Day of Infamy" Speech
by Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Mr. Vice President, and Mr. Speaker, and Members of the Senate and House of Representatives:

Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that Nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American Island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our Nation.

As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our whole Nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable triumph- so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

Part A

What is one of Roosevelt's purposes for delivering this speech?

to highlight the devastation Japanese forces have caused both in the Pacific and in Europe

to inform the American people of Japan's attack on the US and other places in the Pacific

to remind the American people that Japan is an avowed ally of Nazi Germany

to share specific information about America's plan to counterattack Japan's Pacific fleet
Part B

Which statement best explains how Roosevelt uses rhetoric to advance the purpose identified in Part A?

He uses false equivalency, likening the Japanese to the Nazis, to underscore the danger Japan poses to America.

He uses false equivalency, likening the attack on Pearl Harbor to the attack on Guam, to make Japan seem more dangerous than it really is.

He uses repetition, employing the phrase "last night" several times, to stress the number of coordinated attacks carried out by the Japanese.

He uses repetition, employing the word "attack" over and over, to inspire Americans to join the armed forces and aggressively take on the enemy.

Part A:

Answer

One of Roosevelt's purposes was to inform the American people of Japan's attack on the US and other places in the Pacific.

The other possible answer is the one that mentions Japan being an ally of the Nazis, however the word "Nazi" is never mentioned on the speech.

Part B:

Answer

He uses repetition, employing the word ¨attack¨ over and over, to inspire Americans to join the armed forces and aggressively take on the enemy.

Answers

Final answer:

The movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial primarily fits into the science fiction genre, with the film focusing on the relationship between humans and an alien visitor. It blends drama and family elements, and is known for its emotional depth and appealing narrative across different age groups.

Explanation:

The movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial belongs to the science fiction genre primarily, with elements of drama and family. This classification comes from the film’s central themes revolving around an alien who finds himself stranded on Earth and the subsequent interactions with humans he encounters. One could argue that E.T. contributes to the genre through its emotionally resonant storytelling, coupled with the portrayal of the alien as a friend rather than a foe, which was less common in the genre at the time of its release. The creators show a deep understanding of the audience culture through the film’s heartwarming narrative that appeals to both children and adults, reflecting universal themes of friendship and belonging. Moreover, the characters in E.T. are what make the movie memorable, displaying the interplay between human experiences and the extraordinary circumstances of meeting an alien life-form.

What about a modern performance of a Shakespearean play could be changed without affecting the play's meaning?

Answers

Answer:

We could change the language and adapt it to reflect the contemporary English we use nowadays. That would make the play more understandable, especially for the young people and wake up their interest for the theatre.

We could change the setting, that is, time and place of some plays and adapt it to contemporary surroundings, without changing the topic of the plays, as Shakespearean problems and inner struggles are still present in the 21st century, only in different ways.

For example, we could change characters' professions or some circumstances without changing the plot of the story. Or, perhaps, try to represent some contemporary family issues, by readapting Hamlet into a boy who is fighting against his stepfather.

Final answer:

A modern performance of a Shakespearean play can change elements like set design, lighting, costuming, sound effects, music and acting style without affecting the play's central meaning. However, it's crucial that the themes and morals of the original work, like those in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, remain untouched.

Explanation:

Modern performances of a Shakespearean play can adjust various elements without affecting the play's central meaning. Enhancements in set design, lighting, and costume can all modernize the play's aesthetics and attract contemporary viewers while preserving the core narrative. Sound effects and music can also be updated to match modern sensibilities.

Moreover, stage direction can be adapted to make use of present-day theatre technology without changing the play’s meaning. Lastly, the acting style can be adjusted to contemporary dramatic conventions while still conveying Shakespeare's original dialogue and plot. It's important to note that, while these alterations can modernize the play's delivery, the themes and morals embedded in Shakespeare's work, such as the themes of love in Romeo and Juliet and ambition in Macbeth, should remain unchanged to honor the integrity of Shakespeare's work.

The reason why i believe so, is because the robin said she knows the secret best. The robin was the first to know and then told the tree. The robin must have built something for it says , "Because she built the—I shan't tell the rest; And laid the four little—something in it—" and Then say,"Though I know when the little birds fly about Then the whole secret will be out." So I assume the bird must have built maybe a hole into the tree for it to fly out of? I apologize if this does not make sense, but this is what I think the secret is!

Florence Balcombe is probably most known today for demanding that all copies of Nosferatu be destroyed. The answer is B. The film Nosferatu was based on the novel Dracula, but the author never asked permision or recognised that and Florence Balcombe was Bram Stoker's wife. Bram Stoker was Dracula's author, so it's understandable her indignation at seeing a film based on her husband's creation but without having mentioned him on the film or asked authorization for doing so.

Florence Balcombe is best known for her successful legal campaign to destroy all copies of the unauthorized film adaptation of her late husband Bram Stoker's novel, 'Dracula', titled 'Nosferatu'. The correct option is B.

Florence Balcombe is probably most known today for demanding that all copies of Nosferatu be destroyed. She was the widow of Bram Stoker, the author of the famous Gothic novel Dracula. What is the best revision of the troublesome modifier in sentence 5?

Answers

The best revision of the modifier "badly" in the sentence 5 is "bad" : She felt bad that someone had lost such a nice watch. The word badly is an adverb, the word that modifies other words and verbs: badly made furniture ; she was treated very badly. In this sentence (modified), the word bad  is an adjective that follows a linking verb "felt."

Answer:

The best revision of the modifier in sentence 5 is to use bad instead of badly.

Explanation:

The adjective bad should be used instead of the adverb badly because feel is a copulative verb. A copulative verb shows no action, it links the subject to an adjective or to another noun. All the verbs denoting the five senses are linking verbs: taste, look, sound, feel, and smell. Therefore, the revised version of the sentence would be as follows: She felt bad that someone had lost such a nice watch.

Answers

The drawings were made in black and white. The backgrounds of the vignettes are usually black or white, some are decorated quite simply to give greater importance to the text. The image becomes a reflection of the text, and not the other way around, which is important because it avoids having only an explanatory value. The information is incorporated in the text, which reinforces the importance of it. The language of this story is used in the multiplicity of its registers (familiar and standard, sometimes leaving room for vulgarity), showing the audience the diversity and authenticity of a daily life.

Answer:

The author used what is called "amplification through simplification" technique.

Explanation:

In both panels of Persepolis 2, the author is using the well-known technique "amplification through simplification". The aim of this technique is to reveal the essential meaning by "simplifying" the image - deleting any unnecessary baggage, which allows an amplification of its message. That's the reason why the author used black and white as the primary colors  in the images, making us focus more on the words and characters' changes, rather than the background of them.
