To identify the central idea of a speech, one must look for the thesis statement, which is supported by evidence and structured arguments. Key elements include the use of constitutional references, themes of social and economic change, and the vision for the future communicated through the speech.
Explanation:The question regards identifying the central idea of a speech. The central idea, often synonymous with a thesis statement, is the primary point the speaker is aiming to communicate to the audience. It is typically a clear and concise statement that sums up the essence of the speech, and guides the structure and arguments within the speech. Key to identifying this are signals like the emphatic conclusion that reiterates the thesis, the foundational evidence provided, and the structure that supports the central idea with reasoning and sometimes a call to action. Furthermore, understanding the importance of political justice, specific constitutional references like the preamble, and themes in social and economic change can lead to a deeper comprehension of the speech's message.
Eloquent statements like those in the preamble of the United States Constitution can offer insights into the principles on which the speech is built. Also, the mention of using wealth to enrich and elevate national life hints at the speaker's vision for the future, which can be an essential part of the central idea. In crafting a speech or analyzing one, it's beneficial to observe how the author or speaker aligns their tone, style, and supporting material to convey and bolster their thesis effectively.
I answer that every requisite in female economy is easily attained; and, with truth I can add, that when once attained, they require no further mental attention. Nay, while we are pursuing the needle, or the superintendence of the family, I repeat, that our minds are at full liberty for reflection; that imagination may exert itself in full vigor; and that if a just foundation is early laid, our ideas will then be worthy of rational beings. If we were industrious we might easily find time to arrange them upon paper, or should avocations press too hard for such an indulgence, the hours allotted for conversation would at least become more refined and rational.
Should it still be vociferated, "Your domestic employments are sufficient"—I would calmly ask, is it reasonable, that a candidate for immortality, for the joys of heaven, an intelligent being, who is to spend an eternity in contemplating the works of the Deity, should at present be so degraded, as to be allowed no other ideas, than those which are suggested by the mechanism of a pudding, or the sewing the seams of a garment?
Based on this excerpt, which phrase means the same as, "avocations press too hard for such an indulgence"? (5 points)
A: All work and no play
B: No work and no play
C: No work and all play
D: All work and all play
Answer:
A. But do not be surprised if it is not.
Explanation:
The author in the sentence quoted is saying that if women cannot afford the time to put their ideas to paper, then at least the ideas expressed in their conversation should improve.
I don't think it is a question of work and play. It's sort of a silly phrase, but I realize you are stuck with it.
I think A is your best answer, and I cannot think of any kind of alternative from the other 3 that are satisfactory. The problem is that there is compensation for having little time but being able to think: the time spent contemplating will show up in conversation.
The phrase 'avocations press too hard for such an indulgence' is equated to 'All work and no play', suggesting that duties are too demanding to allow for leisure time.
The phrase "avocations press too hard for such an indulgence" means that one's other commitments or work (avocations) are too demanding to allow for the luxury (indulgence) of engaging in a certain enjoyable activity, such as writing thoughts on paper in this context. This situation is akin to being so busy with work and responsibilities that there's no time left for leisure or relaxation.
When looking at the multiple-choice options provided, the phrase that most closely aligns with this meaning is A: All work and no play. This option implies that a person is so consumed by their work or other duties that they have no time for leisure, which is the essence of what the phrase in question is conveying.

When it comes to the four types of creative nonfiction–narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive– which do you think would be the most difficult to write? The easiest? Elaborate and explain your reasoning for each answer.
Depending on the information that the speaker wishes to pass, any of the four types of creative nonfiction can be used. I think that the easiest to write will be the narrative essay while the most difficult will be the persuasive essay.
I think that the narrative essay will be the easiest to write because it is a form of storytelling. Here, the writer simply recalls the way events occurred in the past. This will not require much mental work.Persuasive essays are however more tasking because you need to find pieces of evidence to support your argument. You also need to think of ways the opponent might want to counter it. So, the persuasive essay will be the most difficult while the narrative essay will be the easiest.

Persuasive creative nonfiction is likely the most difficult to write due to the need for convincing arguments and evidence, whereas descriptive nonfiction is considered the easiest as it focuses on vivid imagery and sensory descriptions.
When it comes to the four types of creative nonfiction narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive each has its unique challenges and ease.
I believe the most difficult to write is persuasive nonfiction because it requires the writer to construct convincing arguments, present evidence, and appeal to the audience's emotions and logic effectively. Crafting a compelling argument while maintaining accuracy and engagement can be quite challenging. On the other hand, the easiest type to write might be descriptive nonfiction. This form of writing focuses on painting a vivid picture with words, allowing the writer to use detailed imagery and sensory descriptions. Since it is more about capturing a scene or emotion rather than proving a point or telling a structured story, it can be less challenging for many writers. Each type has its place and purpose, but the difficulty level can vary based on individual strengths and experiences in writing.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Doctor Pascal
by Emile Zola
In the heat of the glowing July afternoon, the room, with blinds carefully closed, was full of a great calm. From the three windows, through the cracks of the old wooden shutters, came only a few scattered sunbeams which, in the midst of the obscurity, made a soft brightness that bathed surrounding objects in a diffused and tender light. It was cool here in comparison with the overpowering heat that was felt outside, under the fierce rays of the sun that blazed upon the front of the house.
Standing before the press which faced the windows, Dr. Pascal was looking for a paper that he had come in search of. With doors wide open, this immense press of carved oak, adorned with strong and handsome mountings of metal, dating from the last century, displayed within its capacious depths an extraordinary collection of papers and manuscripts of all sorts, piled up in confusion and filling every shelf to overflowing. For more than thirty years the doctor had thrown into it every page he wrote, from brief notes to the complete texts of his great works on heredity. Thus it was that his searches here were not always easy. He rummaged patiently among the papers, and when he at last found the one he was looking for, he smiled.
For an instant longer he remained near the bookcase, reading the note by a golden sunbeam that came to him from the middle window. He himself, in this dawnlike light, appeared, with his snow-white hair and beard, strong and vigorous; although he was near sixty, his color was so fresh, his features were so finely cut, his eyes were still so clear, and he had so youthful an air that one might have taken him, in his close-fitting, maroon velvet jacket, for a young man with powdered hair.
The first paragraph creates which of these moods for the passage?
Solemn

Agitated
Peaceful
Answer:The correct answer is peaceful. Even though it is very hot outside and the sun is blazing, the room is calm, the blinds only allow a few rays of sunlight i to the room which adds to the peacefulness.

Read the excerpt from "A Quilt of a Country." America is an improbable idea. A mongrel nation built of ever-changing disparate parts, it is held together by a notion, the notion that all men are created equal, though everyone knows that most men consider themselves better than someone. "Of all the nations in the world, the United States was built in nobody's image," the historian Daniel Boorstin wrote. That's because it was built of bits and pieces that seem discordant, like the crazy quilts that have been one of its great folk-art forms, velvet and calico and checks and brocades. Out of many, one. That is the ideal. Which statement best explains the role context plays in better understanding this excerpt? Answer:
1. are

Either that chain or the independent stores carry my brand. (P) because 'the independent stores' is closest to the verb and is plural.
Neither the hanging lamps nor the ceiling fixture gives enough light. (S) because 'the ceiling fixture,' which is singular, is nearest to the verb.
A dozen pennies and one dime make my change purse heavy. (P)
No matter what problems happen on this tour, the Cabot sisters or Mr. Van Ness has the solution. (S) because 'Mr. Van Ness,' which is singular, is closest to the verb.

What are flying buttresses? Describe how and why they are used.
Answer:
The flying buttress (arc-boutant, arch buttress) is a specific form of buttress composed of an arch that extends from the upper portion of a wall to a pier of great mass, in order to convey to the ground the lateral forces that push a wall outwards, which are forces that arise from vaulted ceilings of stone and from wind-loading on roofs.
The defining, functional characteristic of a flying buttress is that it is not in contact with the wall at ground level, unlike a traditional buttress, and so transmits the lateral forces across the span of intervening space between the wall and the pier. To provide lateral support, flying-buttress systems are composed of two parts: (i) a massive pier, a vertical block of masonry situated away from the building wall, and (ii) an arch that bridges the span between the pier and the wall — either a segmental arch or a quadrant arch — the flyer of the flying buttress
Explanation:
As a lateral-support system, the flying buttress was developed during late antiquity and later flourished during the Gothic period (12th–16th c.) of architecture. Ancient examples of the flying buttress can be found on the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna and on the Rotunda of Galerius in Thessaloniki. The architectural-element precursors of the medieval flying buttress derive from Byzantine architecture and Romanesque architecture, in the design of churches, such as Durham Cathedral, where arches transmit the lateral thrust of the stone vault over the aisles; the arches were hidden under the gallery roof, and transmitted the lateral forces to the massive, outer walls. By the decade of 1160, architects in the Île-de-France region employed similar lateral-support systems that featured longer arches of finer design, which run from the outer surface of the clerestory wall, over the roof of the side aisles (hence are visible from the outside) to meet a heavy, vertical buttress rising above the top of the outer wall.
Flying buttress of Reims Cathedral, as drawn by Villard de Honnecourt
The advantage of such lateral-support systems is that the outer walls do not have to be massive and heavy in order to resist the lateral-force thrusts of the vault. Instead, the wall surface could be reduced (allowing for larger windows, glazed with stained glass), because the vertical mass is concentrated onto external buttresses. The design of early flying buttresses tended to be heavier than required for the static loads to be borne, e.g. at Chartres Cathedral (ca. 1210), and around the apse of the Saint Remi Basilica, which is an extant, early example in its original form (ca. 1170). Later architects progressively refined the design of the flying buttress, and narrowed the flyers, some of which were constructed with one thickness of voussoir (wedge brick) with a capping stone atop, e.g. at Amiens Cathedral, Le Mans Cathedral, and Beauvais Cathedral.
The architectural design of Late Gothic buildings featured flying buttresses, some of which featured flyers decorated with crockets (hooked decorations) and sculpted figures set in aedicules (niches) recessed into the buttresses. In the event, the architecture of the Renaissance eschewed the lateral support of the flying buttress in favour of thick-wall construction. Despite its disuse for function and style in construction and architecture, in the early 20th century, the flying-buttress design was revived by Canadian engineer William P. Anderson to build lighthouses

That steak was the _____ I've ever tasted.
tender
tenderer
tenderest
Answer:
Tenderest
Explanation:
If it was tender then it would need the word most in front of it. Tenderer is past tense I believe. And tenderest is saying that is the most tender. So C is right :)
The correct word to fill in the blank in the sentence 'That steak was the _____ I've ever tasted.' is 'tenderest'. This is due to the patterns of comparison in English where one syllable adjectives form their superlative form with 'est'.
Explanation:In the sentence 'That steak was the _____ I've ever tasted.' the correct adjective to fill in the blank is 'tenderest'. The reason for this is due to the patterns of comparison in English language. Simple adjectives of one syllable form their comparative and superlative forms with 'er' and 'est'. Hence, 'tender' would become 'tenderer' (comparative) and 'tenderest' (superlative). However, in this context, the speaker is comparing the steak to all other steaks they've tasted in the past, which requires the superlative form 'tenderest'.
