which words from Shakespeare's "sonnet 73" create a gloomy tone?
A. "day" and "west"
B. "fadeth" and "ruin'd"
C. " glowing" and "fire"
D. "choirs" and "birds"
Answer:
b. fadeth and ruin'd
Explanation:
The words from Shakespeare's "Sonnet 73" that create a gloomy tone are "fadeth" and "ruin'd". Thus, Option (B) is correct.
In "Sonnet 73," Shakespeare uses vivid imagery to describe the natural process of aging and the eventual decline of youth and beauty. The word "fadeth" suggests the gradual disappearance or withering away of something once vibrant, while "ruin'd" indicates a state of destruction or deterioration.
These words, combined with the overall imagery of fading light and approaching death, create a somber and melancholic atmosphere, highlighting the fleeting nature of life and emphasizing the speaker's contemplation of mortality and the passage of time.
Thus, Option (B) accurately describes the words that Shakespeare used in "Sonnet 73" when creating a gloomy tone.

Select the best word to complete the sentence:
__________ pompous, he was an entertaining person.
Before
Never
Though
Despite
The best word to complete the sentence is though. The correct option is C.
How to explain the informationThe other words do not make sense in the context of the sentence. Before and never would suggest that the person was not pompous at all, while despite would suggest that his pomposity was a hindrance to his entertainment value. Though, on the other hand, acknowledges the person's pomposity while also suggesting that it did not prevent him from being entertaining.
Before: This word suggests that the person was not pompous at all before he became entertaining. This does not make sense, as the sentence is about how the person was both pompous and entertaining at the same time.
Never: This word also suggests that the person was not pompous at all. This is even less likely than the previous interpretation, as it is hard to imagine someone who is never pompous being entertaining.

THE MATCH
There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.
Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.
In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished.
How does this line show the problem with early fire?
It shows how dependable nature is.
It shows how people got fire.

2.They help the reader understand that the needs of veterans are great.
3.hey help the reader understand that veterans receive help from the government.
4.
They help the reader understand that veterans are upset that people don't support them.
The highlighted words in the article emphasize the contrast between ceremonial honors for veterans and their significant real-life challenges, highlighting the inadequacy of these gestures compared to the substantial needs of veterans, such as employment and healthcare support. .They help the reader understand that the needs of veterans are great option 2 is correct.
The highlighted words in the excerpt from "Veterans Appreciate Our Gratitude, But What They Need Most Is Our Help" serve to emphasize the contrast between the honors veterans receive, such as ceremonies and discounts, and the significant challenges they face upon returning home. While these gestures of appreciation are recognized, they fall short in addressing the more substantial needs of veterans, such as assistance with employment, healthcare, and the impact of physical or cognitive disabilities resulting from their service.
The correct interpretation of the highlighted words, therefore, is that they help the reader understand that the needs of veterans are great (option 2). These words underscore the fact that the gratitude shown through ceremonial respects and discounts is inadequate when considering the real, often severe situations that veterans encounter post-service. The context provided by the related excerpts points to a need for more tangible support, like the economic aid and medical assistance which can truly make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families.

What symbols might an author use in a story about a character who is confused about his identity?
A. Luxurious clothing
B. Jigsaw puzzles
C. Gentle household pets
D. Beautiful music
Answer:
B. Jigsaw puzzles.
Explanation:
Reflection upon one´s own identity, one´s consciousness through time and in time, is a philosophical topic that has puzzled thinkers for as long as thought has been present in humanity. In order to elaborate this topic through a fictional character, it would be fitting for a writer to use as a symbol the figure of a jigsaw puzzle since it, just like one´s own identity, seems to be comprised of pieces and fragments that one needs to place in a given order and arrangement —through effort and attention— in order to catch a glimpse of the overall image hidden in the composability of the pieces.
